I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

Re: The comprehensive Johnlock guide (Johnlockers only)

The comical effect of the above mentioned passage lies in the fact that John and Sherlock use romantic language but title themselves in an utmost formal manner. The effect can only be captured in English, if I substitute „John“ and „Sherlock“ with something ridiculously formal like „Your Majesty“ or „Your Highness“, for example.

„Have Your Majesty ever been told you have singular eyes?“
„Does Your Higness really mean it?“
„I think, I will now kiss Your Majesty.“
„Oh, Your Higness, you don´t know how long I have been waiting for this. And what about your wife, Her Ladyship?“
„Forget her. Everything that counts now is Your Majesty and me.“
„Your Higness is full of surprises.“

You´ll get the idea.

Re: The comprehensive Johnlock guide (Johnlockers only)

@nakahara...
I'm not really sure if Mary and/or the warstans have a saintly status in fandom. I think there are more than a couple of fans who are not really to happy about Mary Morstan and what has been said about Johnlockers lately. Maybe it was just an unlucky collection of fans/mods in one room, as the whole of the panel seemed to be a bit uninspired.
@tonnaree, you express how I feel: you said that you didn't even mention Johnlock. For me personally the outcome of Mary will have much more impact on my opinion abot the show in future than the question if we get Johnlock or not.

Re: The comprehensive Johnlock guide (Johnlockers only)

Mrshouse, I think the one determines the other. If we get a stable Watson marriage, we will not get Johnlock. If the Watson marriage ends, the only way is forwards, not back (to S1/2). I am 100% sure that the marriage will not last. Just saying.

Yes, I see this chain. But what I wanted to say is that I'm happy with not getting a kiss if I don't get a character I don't like spoon-fed any longer.

What really made me sad was that one of the panelist was also one of the founders of 221b Con!!!  And she said she would just love to see Sherlock and Mary have adventures together.  *sigh*

In my opinion they already had an adventure together in TSOT (where Mary remebered the number of Sholto´s room and Sherlock didn´t), in HLV (sort of ) and in TAB (where Mary even solved Sherlock´s case instead of him).... I don´t see the rationale for her having even more and more adventures together with him....

Little help to John and Sherlock from time to time, OK... but solving cases instead of them, beating the baddies instead of them, outsmarting Mycroft.. why?

I understand the need for the better representation of women, but on the other hand, this is the show about Sherlock Holmes and John Watson first and foremost and in my opinion they shouldn´t be ovwershadowed constantly by the third character.

I doubt the viewers of James Bond would be delighted if their hero played the third wheel to some random Mary Bondette...

Re: The comprehensive Johnlock guide (Johnlockers only)

Discussion is fine. But let's not forget which thread this is. At least one of them should be positive. (Which does not mean that tonnaree's complaints are not justified.)

To say it with Benedict: Love conquers all (and I am quite sure he was not talking about John and Mary).

P.S. We should remember that most clever ideas and conclusions and lovely fan art and brilliant metas come from our side of the fandom, not from the casual viewers or the Sherlolly or Warstan shippers.

Re: The comprehensive Johnlock guide (Johnlockers only)

Even if they had agreed with me completely, god it was a boring panel.  Many people got up and left.

Next year I will go armed with rainbow glitter and confetti.

That gif. It's like someone tried to create a crack gif, but ended up restating exactly what actually happened, just in slightly different words. I love it.

Not that I like this one bit, but for a lot of viewers this seems to have worked. Or at least it was one of the things which inspired lots of discussion within the fandom. Mofftiss might just stick with this a little longer because let's face it, this is one of the things which has kept the fandom alive after S3/TAB. And I'm not saying fandom would have fallen into a deep slumber after S3 without the whole Mary drama, but Mofftiss might just like the fact that the fandom is alive and kicking also because of Mary.

Re: The comprehensive Johnlock guide (Johnlockers only)

If you are telling a love story with a long narrative arc you will need obstacles in the path of your heroes. And a third person is a classic obstacle for love. And a third person not only coming between the lovers but even nearly killing one of them is the obstacle par excellence. In this regard it was right (and Canon) to bring in Mary's character.
