Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Not without totally changing the thrust of the show, they can't, and I can't see them changing the show's basic idea.  If Mary goes, the baby will have to go with her; it would not be possible for Sherlock and John to raise a baby and keep solving crimes.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I wonder why they introduced her at all?  The baby, I mean.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Maybe they couldn't resist Sherlock's deduction, and the "three" being unexpected in TSOT?

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Yeah, I get that...maybe they really are cruel and do just want to kill off an innocent child...
One cannot deny it will add to the drama.
It's just that I feel John will suffer enough losing his wife, but to lose his child too..
Not wanting to sound all Oscar Wilde...

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Yes, that would be careless!

I'll be honest, I really don't want to see a child death.   I'm kind of romantically hoping there's a way to spirit the child away to a happy life in a manner that prevents John spending the rest of the show searching for her.  Perhaps she could follow her mother in taking on a new identity.  I don't really want to see bereavement either.  Not that I want the show to be all slushy and sweet, but I just don't want those things at the moment.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

See for me, I am fully expecting totally devastated John at the loss of the love of his life(Mary) and my heart going out to him.
Only tempered by(I hope) the loving care of Sherlock.
But the loss of his child would just be,,,,well(and I apologise in advance for the sick pun) over kill.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I think they introduced the baby because the marriage was not enough to keep Sherlock and John apart for long. It was meant as an additional obstacle to their relationship (whatever it may look like).

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

From all the team interviews and what we have been shown, you really think that?
I obviously don't.
As I mentioned before, the nearest things I can come to are thinking that Canon Mary possibly dies in childbirth(not that I think BBC Mary will) and that it just adds to the drama, despite how traumatised we will all be.
Possibly Mary dies trying to save the child, who knows?

EDIT: sorry, I realised I may have misunderstood your use of the word 'relationship'...
But no, because in Canon marriage and doctoring were what kept Watson from Baker St- which I assume is what you meant.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I kind of agree, Susi, but more from an emotional point of view with Sherlock - it seems to be after he announces the pregnancy, and the switch to the "three" being John, Mary and the baby instead of (as we thought, and as he seems to hope for) John, Mary and him, that he becomes sorrowful.   And emotionally, I think it could have a huge impact on Sherlock.  He made his vow to the three, after all.   Look how far he went to keep his vow to Mary (if you believe that actually happened).  How much farther might he go to protect the baby?

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I certainly agree on the latter.
Sherlock would certainly put himself in danger to save John's child and I think he would do the same for John's wife.
But I would hope Mary would do so for all three of them.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Susi, I also agree. Introducing a baby onto the scene makes things even more complicated. In terms of telling the story - because hey, with a baby around you can't have John (and Mary) be as spontaneous and available (for a case, for Sherlock, you name it) as before. And especially in terms of the emotional level... bringing John back to 221B is even more difficult with a baby around. Because if you want to keep it in character, I can't for the life of me imagine a baby living in 221B after Mary's potential death (and I know some fans would love to see this, would love to see how Sherlock would deal with this - but please, this just isn't realistic considering the inner logic of the show). So the baby has to die, too. Otherwise you can't bring John back to 221B.

And I remain confident they will do just that.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Same here.  And that means, sad to say, John will have to lose his whole family.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

There is one thing I wanted to ask Mary's supporters for quite some time:

She said John would stop loving her if he learnt about what she did in the past. We have speculated about what she could have done more than once if I remember correctly.

Now my question is:
Is there something she could have done in her past that would make YOU stop loving / liking / accepting her?

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

To be honest, I don't even know if I consider myself a Mary supporter.
I accept the team have built on the canonical character: she is the love of John's life, she genuinely loves him and I think Sherlock likes her, too.
I have no doubt that she has a horrendous past, but I accept it is the past.
It's not my call, it's John's.
I don't know whether he'll find out her whole sordid past or not, but I am certain he would still love her.

@bb: Imagine John would really stop loving her. Would you stand behind him, so to say?

Of course.
But I don't think it will happen.
