I have not seen photos yet of that, but I am sure he looks great.
As for the present-day version of the conversation, assuming that it is the story that is being adapted, I think he could say it, or "if you love Mary," but it could also be "if you love Mary and I." That's what I feel is rather likely. They are the two people John loves most in the world.

I think the line could work in modern Sherlock. Moftiss do like using bits of pieces from canon, we and they already know that they love each other, and it could be an extremely dramatic moment (if, for instance, John believes Sherlock is dying and wants to save him). I certainly wouldn't rule out.
