Re: The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (was "Richard III")

Good Lord this is oh so very promising...I can hardly wait...
Shakespeare and Benedict? God, yes!

A little question though -have the times been given?

Re: The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (was "Richard III")

Thank you, very interesting background information.

And the quotes about Benedict are not so bad either.

Benedict is going to be brilliant.    To no one's surprise.

Re: The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (was "Richard III")

He is, though I gather Ricardians aren't thrilled about the less than flattering Shakespeare portrayal...

Re: The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (was "Richard III")

Perhaps, though the character in the play is not wholly bad, or at least not wholly unsympathetic. He is a tragic hero, in a sense.

Re: The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (was "Richard III")

I believe that Ben will be able to portray him with respect, regardless. He seems very capable of that.

Well he'll masterfully deliver the script he's given.
I did attend that R III day school, I don't remember him being totally bad, but I'll reserve judgement.

Re: The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (was "Richard III")

You have to keep in mind that though it's a history play since it's based on historical events, it is fictionalized (there's ghosts and everything) and would play or not play to certain expectations of the audience at the time.

Oh of course I understand that, but I suspect Ricardians have a different agenda...I used to be  bit of  one myself, in my youth.

Re: The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (was "Richard III")

A good friend of mine who knows a lot about the Wars of the Roses once put it like that - Richard was not so different from other monarchs of the period. Shakespeare in a way has been pandering to Tudor ideology in depicting him as a monster. However, the (presumed) murder of children has always been a taboo and may have made the difference.

Indeed and much as I hate to admit it, I think he is the prime suspect.

I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

I'm also on the floor, which is a bit embarrassing at the office.
