It's not that I want to see more of Mary, not at all, but I agree that we simply need to know a bit more about her background. Otherwise so many things we saw in S3 will never make sense (to me). However, I'm not too thrilled about flashbacks in general, I think telling a story through flashbacks can be a tricky thing. Just like voice-overs, more often than not they don't really work.

The kind of flashbacks I want would not be rehashing.  They would be telling us things we need to know in order for the story to move forward and make sense.

Are you not bothered at all even by the gap between the Watson's domestic and what happened at Christmas?  That is a huge blank space in the story.

I am curious about that, but I doubt the authors would ever return to that - the same way they never bothered explaining which version of "Lazarus" is the real one.

I can pretend to care if you like, but I honestly don't.
All I was bothered about after TRF was The Reunion and then that was a major disappointment to me.
Besides, we've moved on so far since then.

I don't see it as sloppy writing.
I thought it was quite funny, the endless speculation...
And I laughed so hard at the fake resolutions and then the 'possible' real one.
But by then our boys were back together and that's all that mattered to me.

I agree!  Hint, hint, Moffat and Gatiss!  (I can definitely see a need to see enough of Mary's past to be able to make sense of her actions in Season 3, though.  But I most definitely want to see more of John's own past, now that we've seen some of Sherlock's!)

They were back together, and yet they weren't.

Uh, who his parents were, for one thing?  What did they do for a living?  What kind of parents were they?  When did they die, and what of?   Did he have a pet, as a boy?  Does John have any other living relatives besides his sister and one cousin?  We know that he spent 3 years in Afghanistan--in Kandahar and the Helmand Province--and thanks to his CV, we also know where John was born and raised, and where he went to school and then to college.  But there's so much else we don't know, that at least some of us would like to.
