Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

If writers want to do that, I think that's entirely up to them...but I don't think Mark or Steven would do that.

Do you really believe, Vhanja, that it's a fine thing to make use of the stories of queer people to spice up your life? Just for your entertainment, as you put it?

Yes, I do. Just as I would hope anyone else would enjoy any other story for whatever reason they enjoy it. I am the last person to judge why anyone enjoy whatever they enjoy for whatever reason.

Eventually everyone will support Johnlock.   Independent OSAJ Affiliate

... but there may be some new players now. It’s okay. The East Wind takes us all in the end.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

I'd bet that most of us watch Sherlock/read fanfiction/etc.for entertainment!   We might be moved, enlightened, etc. along the way, but entertainment's got to come into it.  It doesn't matter if it's queer fiction or not, if it's badly written and doesn't entertain me, I'm probably not going to stick with it.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Indeed.
I also think a show can be good for various reasons, I don't have any particular criteria in mind when I watch.

I see. Entertainment is for you what counts most.

I think Sherlock and fanfiction (and usually fiction in general, plays, films, etc.) are entertainment.    It's not as if we have to watch/read them, or force ourselves too because we feel we have to learn something.  If Sherlock/fanfic was badly written/acted/filmed and just didn't entertain me, then I wouldn't watch/read it. Whereas I might happily watch/read something that engaged and entertained me, but which didn't really do much else, such as educate me.

I agree. I think that's the main reason fictional movies or series are made and why we watch it. For entertainment. What other reasons should there be to watch it? Entertainment isn't a bad thing and entertainment doesn't necessarily mean the avoidance of serious topics. A drama movie is entertainment as well IMO.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

I think people should stop taking themselves so seriously. Or, at lest, stop thinking that other people should take everything as seriously as they do themselves, and at leastt not judge people who enjoy something for other reasons that you do yourself.

Yeah, I second that.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

I don't see why you feel judged or why you feel challenged to take anything seriously?
Why do you think I expect that from you? (I guess you mean me, even if you didn't say so.)

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Actually I wanted to slightly correct myself, over something I said.
Part of watching BBC Sherlock for me, is feeling it's true to the spirit of the original Conan Doyle stories.
But if the team had decided to go a different way, I could equally enjoy the show...though possibly for different reasons

From the way you phrase your posts.

Actually and honestly, I don't expect you to take anything seriously, if as you said, entertainment is what you want from the show.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Is it the definition of 'entertainment' that is problematic?
It includes something catching one's interest, which for me, suits at least.

Lol, your sarcasm always makes me smile, Harriet. And you still question why I interpret your posts as I do?
