Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Have you guys seen this? A new channel on YouTube - Are They Gay? - have posted a video about Johnlock. It's brand new so it includes TAB.

So it's not from the perspective of a fan or Johnlocker, but from someone who makes these types of videoes. (I had forgotten about John's PIN code - that really can't be a coincidence?!)

Thank you very much for posting this comprehensive overview. All has been said in here but it is great to see it compiled in one video.

... and it even provides reasons why the asexual thing isn't true either. Mycroft, Mrs Hudson and Angelo know better. Lovely compilation!

Eventually everyone will support Johnlock.   Independent OSAJ Affiliate

... but there may be some new players now. It’s okay. The East Wind takes us all in the end.

See Asexuality falls of a spectrum too like preferences for genders or none... The whole thing is actually quite complex.

I like the video though even though I'm not much of a shipper.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Oh my absolute crazy insane madness... How did I, with my love of name play, miss that the only girlfriend Sherlock has ever had... ever in the history of ever is Janine... who has the same name root as John... Janine is a modern anglacised version of Jeannine which is the feminine form of Jean... which is John..

I'm sure others realised this before me... but really? It's been over two years brain and you give me that now?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Yes, I think the Janine/John name thing was discussed here somewhere quite a while back. And notice how Jeanette, John's girlfriend of the moment in S2, bears such a striking resemblance to Sherlock with her dark hair and coat.  And my all time favorite was how Sherlock's mom and dad mirror John and Sherlock in the way they dress.  OMG, it's all so hilarious - and so obvious!

I giggled my way through the whole video.  Loved it.

And I said "dangerous" and here you are.

You. It's always you. John Watson, you keep me right.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Can't honestly say I noticed Jeanette looking like Sherlock.
Where does Sarah fit in this scenario?
Though it's all irrelevant now John is married, anyway.
Certainly Mary is like Sherlock in ability and personality.
But really, if John wants to be with Sherlock, why does he not just be with Sherlock?
I mean if he likes men, why didn't he just date want, never mind marry one?
Makes him seem quite a silly and weak person.
I don't see John like this at all.
I think he knows his own mind and the life he wants to live.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Of course "Jeanette" is a form of "John" too!    I suppose you could say that her waiting about for the elusive John (while John is focused on Sherlock) mirrors John waiting about for the elusive Sherlock (while Sherlock is focused on Irene).

Thanks for the link to the video!  It was fun, and I had a look at the others too (I've always had a soft spot for Kirk/Spock).   I don't think there's any new points in it, but one really big thing I think it's missing is that we're not actually shown anything definite on screen - it's all supposed to be hints and subtext.  We never see either of them admitting to having those kind of feelings for men at all (and if the point was to have "incidentally gay" characters, then why not just make them gay?).  The backstory for John (homophobic father) is just not shown at all.  It's all conjecture.   Of course, that conjecture could be right, but there is still nothing concrete in the show ... and it relies on the idea that these writers who would happily create openly gay and bisexual characters, would feel they had to hide it and only reveal it in code.

The main argument the guy has seems to be (again) that it's queerbaiting if they don't follow through - but I think it ignores the fact that they might not be queerbaiting at all.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Ooh yes, Kirk/Spock...The Original.
I want to reassert, I've never accepted the queer-baiting charge and I think it's a vile indictment of the Sherlock team...who I personally both love and respect
I also wonder if it just means people aren't getting what they want.
I only speak in reference to BBC Sherlock, here.

Some comments on that:

1 Why does not dating make Sherlock look silly and weak???

2 In which regards do you think Mary is like Sherlock character wise?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

1. Because if John wants to date men, why doesn't he?  He's living in 21st century UK, not an Islamic state or even Russia. It makes him seem like he doesn't know his own mind. If the team wanted to show us he was bisexual, why don't they just do that. why don't they show him dating men and women. Why does he say to Mrs Hudson: 'of course we'll be needing 2(bedrooms)' and give her that look. Why does he say' Of course it's a woman'? The John Watson I know doesn't care what anybody else thinks of him and is strong and true to himself. He could hardly accuse Mary of lying to and deceiving him, if he's doing the same himself. I accept she could happily be married to a bisexual man, but why aren't we shown this?
2. Mary has killed, just like Sherlock.

1 One of my best friends is married to a woman for years now. It is the only woman she has ever been interested in, she prefers men but fell for that perspn. Took her a long time to figure out her feelings. She still says she is not a lesbian, she just fell in love with a person that happens to be female.

2 Seriously?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

1. There is quite a well known English singer/songwriter(who I have met and adore). He famously was gay and had only dated men all of his life, was at the front of the gay rights movement in the UK. He is now happily married (I believe to a 'former lesbian') and has children. In fact you may know him, he's German speaking and certainly lived in Germany a while; Tom Robinson. So I know it happens. I see no indication BBC Sherlock are going down this route. I just don't see it fitting with the characters they have created. I can see John ending up back with Sherlock at Baker Street(and of course hope this happens), but I think he will return to his old room.
2. Seriously.

I think they both see it as part of their job, when necessary.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

We have no indication that Sherlock ever regarded it as part of his job to kill people. Mary on the other hand did.
