Just climbed 17 steps to get here

Greetings all!

My name is Matt and I'm a Sherlockian living in Brooklyn, NY. My interest in Sherlock Holmes runs the gamut from the 'higher criticism' (Sherlockian scholarship) through various TV adaptations like Granada's Jeremy Brett or BBC's (1960s) Douglas Wilmer/Peter Cushing to SH posters/prints featuring all Holmes' incarnations.

I run a Sherlock Holmes blog called Always1895.net and can be found on Twitter (cf. my signature for information).

I try to attend as many Sherlockian scion meetings as I can and have recently helped re-start the venerable scion group (originally formed in 1954) called The Priory Scholars of NYC.

I very much enjoy BBC Sherlock but my main allegiance lies with The Canon: particularly investigation, speculation, criticism, chronology, etc. based there-in.

I look forward to learning from and contributing to this Sherlock message board as much as possible.

Be seeing you.
matt

Welcome to the forum Mat, I hope you'll enjoy it. And I like your name, it's a wonderful poem.

Re: Just climbed 17 steps to get here

Welcome Matt!
Now my name gets a different meaning somehow...
I'm not very familiar with the canon, but working on it. Could take another year... or two.
Have fun with the others meanwhile!

Re: Just climbed 17 steps to get here

Hello Matt welcome ! I'm not a Sherlock Holmes expert but like you i really liked Granada's Jeremy Brett version of Sherlock (sometimes still broadcast on TV in France)  and of course the BBC version with Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman. Another one i like too is "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution" with Nicol Williamson.

Re: Just climbed 17 steps to get here

I very much appreciate all your words of welcome. It makes me look forward to getting to know many of you even more!

To answer a question, yes my name "Always1895" is from both Vincent Starrett's 221B sonnet as well as the last line of "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" (p. 93 in Otto Penzler's re-press), a chapter from VS's brilliant The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1933):

Outside, the hansoms rattle through the rain, and Moriarty plans his latest devilry. Within, the sea-coal flames upon the hearth, and Holmes and Watson take their well-won ease...So they still live for all that love them well: in a romantic chamber of the heart: in a nostalgic country of the mind: where it is always 1895.

VS's Private Life was one of my primary introductions to the larger world of Sherlock Holmes. Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) - a movie completely unrelated to Starrett's book other than sharing the same title - inspired me to seriously read the canon while simultaneously watching the Jeremy Brett/Granada episodes. Nearing the end of reading/watching both, I searched for what to read next and chance put Starrett's little tome on front of me...and the rest is history.

For anyone in a similar place, I whole-heartily recommend reading the following:

Vincent Starrett The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
Vincent Starrett (ed.) 221B: Studies in Sherlock Holmes
Edgar Smith(Ed.) Profile Buy Gaslight: An Irregular Reader about the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
Christopher Morley (ed. Steven Rothman) The Standard-Doyle Company

I have many more recommendations but I'm saving them for a more robust 'Introduction to the Writings on the Writings' document.

Welcome to the forum, Matt! I'm quite new to this so I'm afraid that I am not familiar with your blog as others seem to be. But I will definitely catch up. Again, welcome.
