I'm thinking of Mark and Steven's writing and thinking they will go for the grief..

Poor John, I think he's gone through enough.

But we should not forget that Sherlock has been through a lot as well.

Of course, but he won't be the one who will feel the brunt of the pain when/if Mary dies/runs away/has cheated/turns out to be a villain.

I think he felt the pain already when Mary turned out to be a villain. It looked like it hurt quite a lot indeed.

He did, but to me it seems logical that the man who loves a woman romantically will be more hurt by her betrayal/death than the man who likes her because it's his friend's wife.

Which is actually what makes it so difficult for me to understand why John went back to Mary after the way she betrayed him....

Sherlock is not only hurt by a betrayal. He felt actual real horrible pain because Mary turned out a villain.
Molly: "Without the shock, you’re going to feel the pain." (In Redbeard’s corridor, she is standing some distance away from Sherlock as he convulses on the floor, his eyes wide and his teeth clenched. Molly looks towards him, her face serious.)

This would be completely true under normal circumstances. But remember, Sherlock is not a normal individual. He really trusts very few people and he let Mary into his small circle. I'm sure he felt great emotional pain as well as physical.

And, I think it's important to remember that John was also betrayed by Mary-- she knew exactly how he grieved for Sherlock, but she was fine putting John through all that agony again-- and this time, it very easily could have been a permanent death for Sherlock. John might not have been able to get past it a second time.

That's what I'm thinking, too. Grief and trauma.

I'll be keeping a few cases of tissues handy...

I'm presuming S4 is going to have some kind of cliffhanger...
So for this thread, regarding Mary...
Surely it either has to be her departure(one way or another) or a final reveal that she's in league with Moriarty or something?
Personally, I go with the former...
But that is on the assumption that S4 is going to Mary's last series, unless Mark and Steven decide to keep her in the show.

I hope that they resolve the Mary issue completely in S4. By the end of the series I want her gone.

Me too.

It seems this is something many of us can agree.

Me, three.

Same here. I really don't want the thrust permanently changed, and I hope that Mark and Steven don't, either..

I bet the the real "Beth" and "Cath" Mary was phoning during S3 was the same one as in this story:
