When I read that he's shooting in that region I wondered if he would also visit the Tibetan monastery were he worked as a teacher during his gap year. That's not it (I guess) but still cool, also that Adam was there too.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

Yes I guess so...strikes me as a bit idolatrous for Buddhists, I mean really, wouldn't a simple bow do?
Anyway, he's not a stranger to such a setting of course, having spent his gap year in like surrounds.

Not to the "guy", who is actually a Buddhist priest, I presume, given what he has on, but as someone else said, showing respect.  Respect is big in any Asian culture, and maybe in that faith, too, although I don't know Buddhism at all.

Ben did his gap year in Nepal, I believe, so he would be accustomed to all of that tradition, at least in a superficial way.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

Ivy, that is one of the absolute worst "hater" sites.  The person who runs that site steals things from other sites and puts them on her site without any credit (mainly to lure in unsuspecting BC fans to get clicks for the revenue ads contained on the site).

Meanwhile she peppers her site with complete shit about BC, Sophie and a lot of his friends and acquaintances.  Any negative articles about Sophie's work, annonymous mocking insults or outright hateful, snide comments from the site's owner are all constant features along with the mild fan photos and tidbits of fun info.  But make no mistake... the main purpose of the site is to spread hate for Sophie Hunter - the person who runs this blog (and others like her) seem to despise Sophie in the worst way imaginable.

Here's the original site where she stole the photos from -

https://www.facebook.com/Dilgo-Khyentse-Yangsi-Rinpoche-226315370736444/

Feel free to edit your post if you want to and include this link.

And yes they are they are lovely photos of Ben and others at the monastery.  BTW for those interested in the fact that Ben is kneeling... it is a sign of respect towards the Rinpoche (teacher in the monastery) - that's who that "guy" is.  Kneeling is also an optional action that people familiar with the tenets of Buddhism can do as a sign that they are clearing their mind for meditation.  You focus on the act of kneeling to prepare yourself for "mindfulness" - which Ben has spoken about as being something that he practices.

If you wish to learn more about the practise of kneeling and bowing in the Buddhist tradition here is a link that explains it pretty thoroughly...
http://www.urbandharma.org/udharma7/bowing.html

Edit: Also I have found a site that talks about the proper etiquette when you are visiting a Buddhist monastery and it does explain about such things as the white scarf that BC and others are wearing, the presence of the white envelopes in some of the pictures and why Ben and his friends are shoeless in the pictures.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

Thank you for all this information, Ah-chie, it´s very interesting.

To me it seems that Ben is crouching before Rinpoche because he offered a hada /katha (that long white scarf) to him as a gift, as is customary, and Rinpoche repayed a gift by draping the katha around Ben´s own neck.

Or he is trying to sit on the floor, which is common in Nepal and Rinpoche is offering him a seat on the sofa.

What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

Well, since a photo is only a brief moment of time it is almost impossible to tell exactly what Ben is in the process of doing in that one picture. Could be he is about to prostrate, could be he is in the act of kneeling on one knee, could be he is just about to sit down on the floor (and like you said the teacher is offering him a place on the settee). Or it could be another matter altogether!

I have the impression from the whole set of photos that Benedict is being warmly received by the teacher and that Ben and he had an animated, engaged conversation that they both seemed to enjoy muchly. The smiles on Ben and the Rinpoche's faces, where the two of them are standing side by side, are undeniably wide and sincere IMO.

My second most favourite of the group of photos is the one with Ben looking into the large envelope that the Rinpoche has given him. I don't know why exactly, but to me, he looks like a kid opening up a Xmas present.

Re: besleybean - "strikes me as a bit idolatrous for Buddhists"... very common misconception that Westerners make regarding respectful bowing and kneeling in the Buddhist tradition. Bowing and kneeling (and indeed full prostration) is much more common in the Asian sphere of Buddhism. All three acts carry a lot of significance in Asian Buddhism. The link I supplied in a previous post explains it in quite a lot of detail (as to why and how it is done).

But Westerners aren't expected to know these details (and the Rinpoche wouldn't think any less of them if they didn't kneel) - so I am sure that the Rinpoche was probably pleasently surprised by Ben's knowledge of their ways. It really was very thoughtful and respectful of him to act that way in front of the Rinpoche.

I just saw this pix to add to the other RIII photo... (it is an extreme closeup!)

Really lovely! From one of my favourite sites Benophie Daily (but I assume the source is from the BBC naturally).

Maybe he dropped his pen and bent down to pick it up.  As you said, could be anything, just about.

Typo fixed - thank you for alerting me to my mistake.

It is quite a dramatic picture isn't it?  He exudes a furious kind of energy in it that's for sure. I am really looking forward to seeing his Richard III.
