Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

It seems there are people out there who design colouring books and are getting interesting ideas about Mary:

Promo text:
A vital clue from each episode is hidden within the original black and white illustrations, and only by completing the scene can they be found.

And, yes, this is an offical BBC approved piece of merchandise.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

So what do you think about Mary's ring being hidden in the pool and connected to a crime?

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I just saw it, and WOAH! Mary=Moran. Mary, a sniper working for Moriarty? Mary placed with John by Moriarty's people? Could Mary be the new Moriarty?
The mind boggles...

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

If I am not mistaken, this is not Mary's wedding ring but the engagement ring John wanted to give her in TEH. Which does not change the fact that it is used as a hint for a crime, just wanted to mention it.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Something that has bothered me quite a while.

Why is it that Mary is never being properly introduced and also doesn't introduce herself properly to anyone?
A name is something very much belonging to a person. The writers seem to intently refuse Mary this personal attribute whenever possible.
A foreshading of the fact that "Mary" isn't her real name?
John should have asked her in the first place. Remember, he did it before:

Everyone seems to be avoiding Mary's name. This should have given us earlier some cause of alarm.
Here are some examples with my addition of the apparently missing words.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John: "Have you spoken to Mycroft, Molly, uh, anyone?"
Mrs Hudson: "They don’t matter. You do."

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Oh, this is a very good observation, tobe. I saw but I did not observe. And knowing how important names are in the Sherlock universe, this should give us food for thought. Just think of Sherlock introducing himself during their first meeting and given John his full name when saying goodbye. And doing everything to find out John's middle name.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

And then there's the best man scene. When John talks about the two people he loves most in the world he names: "Mary Morstan and...you." Not "Sherlock Holmes". This shows me that Mary and Sherlock are not on the same emotional level to John.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I would find it a bit odd if John was speaking to me and used my name in that context, I mean "you" just seems a much more natural thing to say.
I mean he wasn't making a speech, he was asking a favour from his best friend.
Otherwise it sounds a bit like the old Victoria thing: he addresses me like a public meeting.
On Mary's really name: well we know her initials and she has told John that Mary Watson is good enough for her, so currently(until we have more data), that's who she is.
Certainly if her last initial is "A", then they're not hiding her real name because it links her to another character...unless she has been married before, of course, or is a half sister etc.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Great catch tobe!   I never caught on to that.   It seems like it would have to have been intentional to me. If it had happened once, maybe not, but with all the examples you gave...................just saying.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Ok with Sherlock, at that stage he possibly doesn't care who she is.
With Mrs H, she's in a rush, worried about John.
At the engagement party, I assume the invite said who she was.
But yes, she's possibly the most fascinating character we've had to date.
Wonder if we'll get her whole story and it'll be interesting to see how significant the name is.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

So it is not the individual case but the sum of all the instances when her name is not mentioned. A rule which may be applied to lots of things in the show - one instance may be dismissed as coincidence, many instances should be looked into and give room for interpretation.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

The significance could be that Mary Morstan is not her real name.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

We know that it is not her real name but that it was taken from a dead child's gravestone.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Yes, but we only find that out once she's been unmasked, as it were.
All the given gifs are before we know she is an assassin.

But you can interpret all the instances where Mary is not named as clues that she is not who she appears to be.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Yes exactly, sorry tobe, is that what you were saying?
I thought you were meaning there maybe some other significance, that we don't know yet.
Whereas in fact we are saying the same thing.
So well spotted tobe, if they were indeed clues to her unmasking.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Yes, besley, it seems that we mean the same thing. We saw but didn't observe the clues we were given prior to the confirmation that there was indeed something fishy about Mary.
