Re: Hi to Everyone!

Watches on chains are not cat toys, SKitty!

Re: Hi to Everyone!

Welcome Lupin! Glad to have you, even if your introductory thread has turned into a discussion on fob watches!

I like them but I would never carry one because I'd lose it
My mother used to buy me watches and they were constantly falling off my wrist. Eventually she gave up!

Re: Hi to Everyone!

And no wonder, fob watches are exquisite pieces. I carry one in my job too!

Re: Hi to Everyone!

Fob watches really make a statement when you take one out to check the time. Plus having the chain visible from a waist pocket is really stylish.

@Wholocked: I'm the same sadly. I keep everything in a bag I carry around me with because I forget things like umbrellas all the time.

Re: Hi to Everyone!

Do you mean "bumbershoots"? (Does anyone actually say that?)

Re: Hi to Everyone!

@veecee: Sorry if I sound ignorant but what is a "bumbershoot"?

Re: Hi to Everyone!

"Bumbershoot" is supposedly a British term for umbrella, but I don't know if anyone really uses it. Or "brolly," either.

Brits, can you weigh in?

Re: Hi to Everyone!

We definitely use brolly but I must say I have never heard the other word.

Years ago, I heard "bumbershoot" used but don't remember the circumstances...

Re: "brolly"
My husband and I are under the impression that the British use a lot of diminutives like this. Correct me if I'm wrong. Do you say something like "bickies" for biscuits (cookies to us)? "Go walkies" for take a walk? Now I don't know which ones are real and which ones we have made up ourselves. I know one of us said the other day,"What's for brekkies?" meaning breakfast. We probably made it up.

Re: Hi to Everyone!

Brekkie is used for breakfast and biccies for biscuits. Walkies is used I think mostly for saying to dogs. Wellies for Wellington boots. I bet there are more too.

You made my day!  (I think I just asked about Wellies in another thread. Thanks for the confirmation.)

Re: Hi to Everyone!

Brekkies in Germany is a cat-food brand and Welli is the short form for Wellensittich (budgie - which is a short form, too, as I just learned.  )
