(last Johnlock reference because a question needs answering, after that I'll move back to the proper thread.)
Why a RED handerchief? Why, because red is the colour of love (and danger, yes) ;) I think it is better than a green carnation -the green carnation implied that they acknowledged their homosexuality, and the red handkerchief implies John ackowledges his love for Sherlock?
The red buttonhole on Sherlock's coat in the modern series is like an advertisement.
"Need danger? I'll give you some" (no pun intended...) and as the series progresses, its meaning changes.
Okay, I'll stop there.

Back on the pic, what do you think about Holmes' hair...? I think they could have gone for curly hair (certainly in accordance with the various hairstyle at that time)...Or maybe Ben just said "no".

Lazarus : Quite. But we can't say they are not aware of this (Oscar Wilde?). There must be some plot around this. Or Ben just said "no" (but the cuuuuuuuurrrrrllllls!!! )

I think they just stayed with the description we get in Canon respectively the looks that have been traditionally used for Victorian Holmes and Watson. Maybe for some reason they wanted to keep away as far from the modern day episodes as possible. Although Benedict does not like the curls, I cannot imagine that he is not professional enough to let his hair grow if required. And I am sure the curls will return in series 4.

I have a fear we will never see the curls again. Ben has been clear in his dislike for it, and he is now such a huge name that he can make requirements he couldn't do when Sherlock started.

And he is professional enough not to let that interfere with his work. He wanted to shave his hair for TS and only did not because he needed the hair for Sherlock. So this is not an argument. And he will have to grow it for Dr Strange as well.

I'd have already done it myself if I had any photoship skills at all.
