There are five classes to the Order of the British Empire. CBE (Commander) is the middle one. The two classes above entitle you to carry a title like "Sir" or "Dame". So he will not become Sir Benedict.

As it says, the updated list will be published at 10:30 pm local time today.

The press already has the info but obviously there is a news embargo on it until the official announcement - of course some of the less ethical outfits ignored the official embargo and published bits (probably the more "click worthy" items) early.

As for detailed information about the honours there is an easily accessible web site at this link that gives a pretty complete picture if you want details...

But Sir Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch just has such a lovely ring to it. Maybe in a few years from now, or can you only be awarded one of there five classes in your life? I have to admit I am not terribly familiar with those kind of honours.

There are plenty of examples of people who received a CBE in the past getting higher honours later in life. Here's one from the last batch of honours given from this year's New Years Honour List...

Under the Knights Bachelor section -

John Vincent Hurt CBE

John Hurt, in a career spanning more than fifty years, has appeared in well over 100 films and received numerous awards including BAFTAs for The Naked Civil Servant, Midnight Express and The Elephant Man and the BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema. He was Oscar-nominated for The Elephant Man and Midnight Express, received the Golden Globe for Midnight Express, and two Evening Standard Awards including the Alexander Walker Special Award and the Best Actor Award for 3 films - The Hit, 1984 and Champions. He was awarded the inaugural Richard Harris Award for Contribution to Cinema by the British Independent Film Awards and was made a Fellow of the BFI in 2009. He is Chancellor of Norwich University of the Arts and Patron of Derby QUAD and Norwich Cinema City. He is Patron of the charity Project Harar and has hosted events for Amnesty International and NSPCC/Childline.

John Hurt was awarded his CBE in 2004 and then was knighted in the New Year honourees of this year for his contributions in drama.

Confirmation that there has been a news embargo on the release of information about Benedict being awarded the CBE...
