Yeah, that's very slow indeed. That would probably make me impatient as well. Though it depends on the context. Which story is it?

It was "State of Flux". I like a lot of things about this story but they share a bed from day 278 but have sex only on day 365. A bit long if you ask me.

Mmmhh, ok. I never gave a thought to the time frame, to be honest. But I like the story just the way it is and found the slow building relationship very convincing in this case. So, it depends on the story context and the personal tast of course

For me it was this one:
To be Loved by You (28775 words) by TwisterMelody

It was lovely, and I will recc it right away. But here they also slept in the same bed rather at the end of a (otherwise well balanced) slow build and did nothing but cuddle.

I think it is a wonderful idea to make their relationship start slowly, after all that they have been through. I just think that even with Sherlock being a virgin and John being inexperienced with men, there must be more physical attraction. Not necessarily leading all the way, but something more intense than cuddling.

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

I liked the slow burning in State of flux as well. And it says at one point that they had erections in each others present, and that that's bound to happen when sharing a bed. So it's not only making cow eyes from the very opposite side...

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

I loved the State of Flux slow build as well. To me, that was just the perfect balance of being slow, but not too slow. I do agree, though, that in most cases that wouldn't be realistic. I just think it can work, depending on circumstances.

Another story that has them sleeping in bed for several months in a believable way is the series Two Coffees One Black One with Sugar Please. This is another one of my favorite story, because of the slow (but warm and funny) build.

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

I am in the middle of State of Flux now and I love it. So I've come to change my comment on slow build fics: I like slow build fics when the speed of story telling is right. In the first two chapters of State of Flux, nearly 300 days are covered, but not at epic lenght. The writer (well done you, if you are reading along here) has chosen carefully what to mention and what to leave out, and it works perfectly.

But just like I said about this oher fic, it annoys me (unfortunately, maybe it is just me being impatient for the boys to get it together) when they need 16 chapters to declare their love and then one of them goes for a walk before they finally kiss.

I haven't read that particular fic, but, yes, that sounds too much (or too little) for me as well. Which is why I am not reading it.

Are you talking about "Sketchy"? If so, I think you might be missing what I think is some intelligent, quality writing.  And because I enjoy the quality authorship, I find that the pace that is set in the story works for me. There's a lot of depth and richness to uncover along the way. And when they do finally get to physical part, it's written beautifully.Just my opinion. I'm glad there about a zillion chapters.   I'm still enjoying it.

And I said "dangerous" and here you are.

You. It's always you. John Watson, you keep me right.

Oh, absolutely! Not saying anything negative about the quallity of the story, I don't doubt it's great. This has more to do with me and my personal taste than anything to do with the quality of the story.

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

Oh hey, that's a brilliant thread.

I'm in the middle of Sketchy right now, and I love it. But then, I absolutely LOVE extreme slow burn. The type of fic that gives you butterflies in your stomach when they finally, FINALLY kiss. I would never be able to write novel-length fic where they get together after like 15 chapters, I'm way too impatient for that -- but I admire people who do it and I enjoy reading it. I think Sketchy is magnificent so far! It's one of the few fics I've read that has well thought-out cases in it!

As for State Of Flux and men sharing a bed for months without having sex: I can totally see your point, and yeah, it really is unrealistic.-- My usual headcanon is that after the first kiss, years of repressed feelings sort of break free and they land in bed immediately, and it's really emotional and overwhelming.
State Of Flux is basically the most extreme slow burn with gentle John and insecure Sherlock I could possibly imagine. In my imagination, John suspects Sherlock is asexual the entire time and that they simply won't have sex anytime soon, and Sherlock doesn't know what he's doing so nobody initiates things...  (No, honestly, I am so happy you all read it! I'm very interested in your opinion and please don't hold back just because I'm possibly reading it, I'd never be insulted or anything. It's all a matter of personal preference after all!)

Nice to have you here, Atiki. As I said, the burning was a bit too slow for my taste but as a whole I liked the fic very much.

*sneaking in*
Not sure, is there a thread for asking for recommendations?
I love film crossovers. I like having Sherlock and the lot thrown in a different, but established setting.
Can someone recommend one? I've read one, that was phantom of the opera, which I liked, I don't know the name right now. Johnlock one.
I wouldn't mind reading a good Titanic one... like the sea stuff, ships and such. But it's always so hard to pick a good one on first try

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

These are not really film crossovers, but very good period AUs. I loved them both

19th century, John is a clergyman, Sherlock is an atheist freethinker.

And this one. Set in WWI in historical Craiglockhart hospital, PTSD, Johnlock.
"Bring me back to life"

Hope this helps.

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

If I can recommend you a few too, I´ll go for these:

The Frost is all over by Chryse

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1614890?view_full_work=true

Wonderful period piece with a touch of Dickens and beautiful love story between teenage Sherlock and John.

Two years as your interpreter by prettyvk

http://archiveofourown.org/works/972991?view_full_work=true

Most beautiful Sherlock AU I´ve ever read. Sherlock is a young clairvoiant and John a person who interprets his words to the world. Dark foreshadowing, lots of angst, incredibly sweet Johnlock and a fantastic ending!

And if you like Sherlock in a film setting, there´s nothing better than

Performance in the leading role by Mad_Lori

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

Thank you!!

"Perfomance in a Leading Role" is great, I read it as one of my first longer fanfics, it was recommended to me and I was totally convinced I wouldn't like the setting, and I totally loved the whole thing in the end :D

Oh, I just realised I have read "The Frost is All over" already as well

Chryse is good too.

This is my most favourite of her stories - it´s absolutely amazing (and delightfully smutty and Johnlocky):

Re: Fan Fiction Addicts General Round Table Discusion - ADULT CONTENT

Ok, if we can ask for recommandations here, I would like to get the feelers out for what i'm looking for:

A rather long-ish type fic that is true to the series (but doesn't have to be true to all seasons/episodes), and where the fic sort of starts with the two boys in 221B as friends, just as in the series. And then a gradual, but realistic build-up of a romantic relationship, with a true-to-character showing of how Sherlock and John would deal with that.

I don't care about rating, case fic etc. As long as it's well-written with realistic build-up true to character, I'll read it. Oh, preferably completed. I've read The Road Less Travelled, so something in that lane would be nice.

The "Waste of breath" I just recommended fullfills that criteria, I believe.
