Well ...
You're such a bad girl Schmiezi!

IMO that's true for the whole story, not just the sex scenes within the story. I want Sherlock to sound like Sherlock, saying and doing Sherlock things, and the same for John, saying and doing John things. Just because the two of them have decided to hook up in the story I'm reading, I don't want to sit there and wonder who in heck those two guys are, because I cannot "see" or "hear" our familiar guys in the author's Sherlock and John. So anyway, yeah, I want the sex scenes to ring true in that way, but I want the characterizations in the whole story to ring true as well, whatever the author has them getting up to throughout.
Oh, absolutely! I think the same. But I've read fics where the everyday dialogue seem to be IC and true to Sherlock and John, but as soon as the sex scenes starts it becomes... generic porn. I can't recognize any of them any more.
It is very hard especially when we haven't seen the two of them have sex. One is hetero, and the other is... Sherlock. So that makes it extra challenging to write a good sex scene.
The smart authors are the ones who know for sure they can't write sex scenes, so they don't try, they just write fade-to-black or they stick to friendship stories. OTOH, until an author tries, she'll never know whether or not she can write good romantic sex scenes.
IMO we don't have to have seen sex scenes in the actual show--- even if we did, they wouldn't be very explicit anyway-- after all, if someone were writing an original story (not fan fic) with their own original characters, everything they're writing would be stuff they'd never seen before. That's what being creative is all about-- producing something wonderful out of nothing but an idea.

Sex scenes are difficult in general, even without counting the language difficulties.
Unless you're writing porn or romance, there's almost never a good plot reason for a sex scene. Like if you write a thriller story and include a sex scene, you can almost hear your audience sigh like 'why are we spending time like this? I want to know about the two headed serial killer!' So if you want to make one there must be a good reason, easier said than done.
The story should move forward, even in a sex scene. It's not an intermezzo, at least not if you want the scene to be interesting. Something must happen, usually the emotional meaning of the sex. The bonding (or lack thereof) between the two people involved. Otherwise it's just a description of a physical process. Boring as hell.
I guess if I had to choose between vulgar and euphemisms, I'd probably go for vulgar. I hate vague language and sex scenes are full of it.
This whole discussion, BTW reminded me of Dara O'Briain's routine on the A for Alpha, B for Bravo thing, which you can see here at 1:24:24
If you don't know Dara, he's worth a youtube search. He's a genius IMHO.

Porn. That's what porn is-- sex for the sake of having sex, and nothing else worth talking about going on. It makes me mad when people categorize all homoerotic romantic fan fic as porn-- it's not, not unless it's PWP, and even a lot of stories labeled PWP *still* have relationship aspects to them that remove them out of the realm of porn and into romance.

Ladies, I think we all have gone very OT here, myself included. Please keep this thread for fic recommendations and discuss all other issues in the Round Table thread. Thank you.
Offline
Someone should really recommend a PWP fic now.
Offline
Susi, I was about to suggest the same a while ago, but this thread has a warning in it's title and the other one not, it's for general discussions. So I would prefer to keep it here.
Offline
Ah, yes, I forgot about that. Maybe we will have to open another one or, which is easier, change the title of the Round Table accordingly. Because I would like to keep recs and discussions apart if possible. Just for the sake of clearness.
Offline
Hmh, tonnaree started the Round Table, I don't think she will accept that kind of change
Offline
Oh, this is true. Tonnaree is not very fond of adult fiction.
Offline
She might be upset and all that
Offline
Oh, the poor innocent soul.

What have you guys been smoking?
Feel free to make what ever adjustments you deem necessary to the health of the fourm.
Offline
Done.
I did not smoke anything. We just did not want to hurt your sensitivity or whatever it is called by sullying your round table. Too late now.
Offline
Ha I was about to do the same Susi - was hoping it would die a natural death. But yes, this thread is not for discussions. Feel free to open another. Wouldn't want to upset Tonnaree's sensibilities, after all ;)

Schmiezi, I love this, and yes, some new fic recs would be wonderful, PWP or not.

I started this thread, and I don't mind if slash fic discussion goes on here. Anything to further the cause of johnlock fic, lol. Just my two cents-- naturally the mods can ask us to do whatever they feel is best.

I simply put a warning in the Round Table title. So we can discuss everything smutty and non-smutty in there and keep this for recs. Of course people can say I loved that fic, etc, but longer general discussions should go in the other thread.

Not sure but I think we did not have this one before. It is the first part of the James Holmes Chronicles. At first I was a bit skeptical because there are good and bad parentlock fics but this is one of the very best fics I know. Slow-paced, beautifully written, eventually Johnlock but nothing explicit in the first part. And the idea itself is so brilliantly executed.
The sequel is regularly updated WIP. You should not miss these.
