Thanks Pav! I've read few books about Engima but none of them explain this subject so easily as this films

Re: The Imitation Game

I'm glad you find them useful. I recommend watching Numberphile's other videos as well, some of them are really interesting even for a maths layman like me. I'm actually going to visit London for the first time in my life. It will be a one day trip (including one of London's cinemas) and I'm so excited! I borrowed both Turing's biographies (in French), 3 London guides and I'm watching a lot of Youtube videos. I'm going to enjoy every second in London.

Re: The Imitation Game

I've also found some time ago a very interesting lecture about Turing and his work, spoken by one of his biographer Jack Copeland. It's very long (1,5 hour) but absolutely worth listening

Pav - you wrote you've borrowed both Turing's biographies - you mean Hodge's one and Copeland's one? Or some other author?
And btw, have great time in London

Re: The Imitation Game

Thank you, Marta, will try to watch it soon.

Here are some voice from members of the Turing family about Benedict's portrayal that are really wonderful:

Sir John Dermot Turing, Alan Turing’s nephew and a Bletchley Park Trustee, says “The way that Benedict portrays Alan is bound to become the definitive portrayal. It’s perfect casting - I couldn’t imagine anybody better.”

James Turing, Dermot’s son , who is studying civil engineering at university, was recruited as a supporting actor in the bar scenes filmed at Bletchley Park. He adds “The amount of knowledge Benedict has about Alan is amazing. The level of detail he’d gone to - speaking to professors and trying to understand the psychological aspects behind things - was just incredible.”

Re: The Imitation Game

Love to hear that! I think that that is the greatest appreciation for actor when family members are admiring his/her work. I can't wait to see this film even more

I meant Hodges' and Leavitt's (David Leavitt: The Man Who Knew Too Much: Alan Turing and the Invention of the Computer). I thought those were the main ones because they were the only ones in Parisian libraries.

Re: The Imitation Game

The crossword, ladies, please rack your brains.

I did it! And even though I already knew the clip I am quite proud of myself. No chance for Bletchley Park but it was fun.

Re: The Imitation Game

Well done!  It looks like you would have had a chance for Bletchley Park if you'd been in the right place at the right time!

(The website isn't working for me, so I can't see it, but presuming it's the one used for recruiting?)

Two wild guesses, since I haven't done the rest of the puzzle and don't know how these would fit in or not:

When hammering, you're supposed to hit the nail on the head, as the expression goes. Could 8 down be nailshead?

The only thing that occurred to me for 9 across, the currency substitution, was ducat.

???

I think it was part of the puzzle they used for recruiting and no, I would not have had the slightest chance. It tooks me far too long and I had the internet on my side. Solving the whole thing in 10, 8, or 6 minutes is amazing.

Ancientsgate: The hammering thing was "right nail". Sorry, have forgotten the other one.
