This reminds me of this incredible weird dream I had some months ago...
I was Benedict (told you it was weird!) And I was getting drunk on Sake with Martin on one of the first days of shooting the new Sherlock series and we decided it'd be a good idea to cut almost all of my hair off... the next day I had to meet with Mark and Stephen and I was so, so scared of what was going to happen when they saw.

I'm wondering if you're onto something there, Heidzer.
Traditional portraits of Richard are a kind of pudding bowl hair cut...any Blackadder fans may know what I mean!
So possibly Benedict couldn't realistically wear that look in his everyday life...so it may well be a wig.
Though they didn't go down that route with Hiddles, on his stint in Hollow Crown
