mycroft's wife

In the series you could clearly see that mycroft wears a wedding band. But where is his wife (and kids)? In "his last vow", he is at the parents' house for Christmas,  and still no wife. Why is he wearing a wedding band if he is single?

That's the perfect quote. Seems that Mycroft is a widower (he can't be a divorcee since divorcees usually don't keep the rings). Quite sad. Perfect it made him even colder?
