That picture confused me for a moment. I'm like that looks like Sherlock, but we've never seen Sherlock in a tux. And then I remembered that I did my best to delete that whole scene from my mind.

Oh, Mary, you don't like this scene? Why (if I may ask)?

gently, I just prefer colour photographs. I like bright colours and pastels and a lot of light - black and white photos are often very dark. But sometimes I have to change my mind and say that a particular photo wouldn't be better in colour - and I posted an example
Mary, I suggest you to delete John hitting Sherlock if you don't like it but keep Sherlock's look in that scene, it's definately worth remembering

I guess I'm the only one who actually thinks that John hitting Sherlock is absolutely normal human reaction and laugh every time I'm seeing it

It is just so painful to watch Sherlock make a fool of himself like that, and then we get the start of John's beat down, which, while I can understand, is still completely unjustified. Neither characters' most dignified moment and not the reunion they deserved. I don't think Sherlock is that much of an idiot and it pains me that the writers think so little of their characters and so little of the viewers that they assumed we'd find this funny.

I don't share your interpretation. I think it didn't show Sherlock as an idiot, nor did the writers think little of their characters nor are we supposed to laugh at it. It's not a stupid joke. It's rather a sad story.

I think I can't agree with you. It's not about showing Sherlock as an idiot but about showing what kind of person Sherlock is. Someone else in this situation will probably apologise and beg for forgiveness but Sherlock is not like most people. He hasn't thought that his action make John suffering and will leave him in such pain, he has thought that if he just show himself in front of John and explain whole situation John will happily welcome his back. It hasn't occured to him that John might be angry or even furious. I think Sherlock also disguised himself because he want to make their reunion funny and less serious because, like I said, he thought that John will be happy to see him again - and I see nothing foolish about that. And I think that is the reason why writers decided to show Sherlock and John meeting like that - to show how irresponsible human Sherlock was and to show even more how Sherlock is different than other people.
I have to say I prefer this reunion rather that this one in oryginal story. Mainly because John is reacting like normal human being and it's less melodramatic like in Doyle version. But I respect your opinion.

It is painful to see Sherlock slowly realising what he has done to John. He is not good at dealing with feelings (as is John) and goes for a comic approach. Only when he sees the horror and the hurt in John's face he goes quiet. He is clutching at straws because he cannot express himself in any other way, a thing he learns in the course of series 3.
I think it was quite courageous of Mark to write the scene like this. And it allows for a development towards the best man speech which shows Sherlock finally being able to talk about his feelings.

Yes, exactly, Susi
Absolutely nothing to add

I agree, Sherlock is not shown as an idiot here, but as someone who isn't used to emotions and who has difficulties with dealing with a situation like this one. When later on he says to Mary "Human? No. Nature? No", this is not just a joke but the truth. He isn't familiar with human nature at that point.
I love the way this whole sequence plays out, and in my opinion it's not about cheap jokes or treating Sherlock or the audience as idiots. John's first reaction to Sherlock is one of the best things I've ever seen on television, I can practically feel his pain and shock. And I can also almost practically feel Sherlock's uneasiness and helplessness. It's a great moment.

Ok I'm in possession of a picture that will stop hearts. I've needed the electric paddles a couple of times..... It's from the Black Mass set... I'll let you make your own deductions....

I love the guy - but I hate those glasses. At least he's looking straight at me, so I won't complain.

I just wanted to say I agree with Susi and Solar about the scene in the restaurant. It's a very powerful scene and I everytime I re-watch it, I laugh less and less. There is actually nothing funny there when you think about John's and Sherlock's feelings.
Back to topic: take off the glasses and show us your eyes! I mean, please.

Sorry, one last time back to "off topic":
Look at these pics and tell me, what's funny:

I agree that Sherlock and John reunion is sad and heartbreaking but to me moment when John is hitting Sherlock was definitely made to low the tension and to make viewers maybe not laugh but at least smile. And there no tragedy in that.
