It doesn't need it.
But some seem to require it.

Well, in my opinion if you make a claim, you need to explain on what grounds you're making it.
If you think that's not required, that's your business of course.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.
I mean, I feel I understand Sherlock well.
But obviously, so do Johnlockers.
There are 2 possible explanations for this:
1. Either the show is not clear.
2. The interpretataion isn't always accurate.
Incidentally, I could agree with you about interpreting from the show.
But what of the pilot and fan fic?

I think the show can be read as being ambiguous, at least at times.
That being said, to me it's been crystal clear right from the first episode I ever saw that Johnlock does exist in the show - and that was at a time when I didn't even know about the term 'Johnlock' or about fanfic or about the Pilot. I started reading fanfic only several months after having joined the fandom, and it took me quite some time before I watched the Pilot for the first time.

For me as a very unromantic person it seemed crystal clear from the first episode that they had a special something, but that this special something was so far from anything physical or the mainstream notion of "romantic love" that this interpretation just existed as a joke and in the imagination of "normal" people around them who didn´t get the extraordinary character of their connection. I thought that automatically putting two guys in the position of a gay couple just because they are unattached, attractive and live and work together was rather boring and jumping to the most obvious conclusion. (I didn´t know about the term "Johnlock" back then, or that this pairing has such a broad and dedicated fanbase.) After S3 and months on this forum and tumblr I´m not so sure anymore, (or better I´m quite sure they are in love in a way, still doubt the physical aspect..), but still I interpret most of their interactions completely different from the way Johnlockers seem to do.
Example:
Johnlockers: Sherlock sacrificed his career for John who was in danger, that´s romantic.
Me: Sherlock saved three lives and freed the world from a criminal network, that´s heroic.
Johnlockers: Sherlock and John agreed to die together at the pool, that´s true love.
Me: Sherlock and John agreed that if they are to die anyway it will be on their conditions and they will take Moriarty with them, kudos to their rational and heroic thought in the face of certain death.
Johnlockers: John told Sherlock to run and save his life, he must love him like crazy.
Me: John is the type of guy who risks his own life in order to save others.
Johnlockers: Smoldering heat, eye-sex!
Me: How to say "Shut up!" without actually speaking.
And so on.
Of course I still see all the hints in the show that point towards Johnlock, but personally I rather feel manipulated into associating the two of them with lovers/a couple when clearly they are not (I don´t know if I can express what I mean here, it´s complicated and I´m not too articulate in English..). To be honest I often roll my eyes at the running joke or when the hints are very obvious, like stag night and the likes.. Probably I just don´t want to see it. (And if anyone jumps to the conclusion "homophobe" now I shall be very disappointed ).
I interpreted the subtext in S1 and 2 in my unromantic way, but also feel it might not be possible/realistic anymore after S3. And now I´m worried about S4.. (because I don´t like to be wrong and because I don´t watch the show for feels and relationship stuff and because I´m a horrible person who is against love in general and kicks little puppies, in case anyone was wondering..)

I'm a tad confused as to why you're worried about S4.
In case they keep Mary?
In case John and Sherlock don't get it on?!
Offline
In case the Johnlock conspiracy is true and Johnlock becomes maintext, or so obvious I can´t interpret the show in my preferred "deep friendship only"-way anymore..

I can assure you, you are perfectly safe there.
The beautiful bromance will live on!

Ok, guys, lets list the top 20 where there is perfect friendship amongst m\f-couples:
1) Pretty woman (perfect bromance with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts)
Offline
Hm, do you want to imply that if John was a Joan no one would ever doubt they will end up together and people who don´t see it with Sherlock and John are just blinded by the overwhelming presence of hetero-normative couples in the media? Or what is this list about?
Offline
I'm a tad confused by the list, too.
There may be hundreds of examples of male- female freindship...
But there will be an equal amount of male-male friendships and:
John is married!

No, zatoichi, I don't want to call anyone blinded here. I'm quite sure we all are a collective around this forum for whom any sort of pairing is just fine and we all accept all kinds if living concepts here. So do I.
But indeed I'm convinced the discussion would never be that heated if it was a m/f-couple, I might be wrong of course. But honestly, give it a try.

I remain puzzled.
There are many different kinds of films/TV shows wirh many different kind of hero pairings, some friends some partners..
Ours is based on original stories and happens to be 2 male friends...andt?!

I just wanted to say that John being married is not solid evidence of his hetrosexuallity. I"ve known many gay people who entered into traditional marriages for a lot of reasons. And there are many ways you can interpret John going through with his marriage to Mary. Yes, including he loves her and really wants to be with her. I"m just pointing out that "married" doesn't end the debate.

But of course, bb, there are tons of different connections in real life as well as on tv. I was referring to your post earlier that the bromance was safe and forever living and maybe I misunderstood you but it seemed to me just a little bit that maybe it would be argued less if m/f. But we can have lists of friendships, I'm always keen to learn.

True. And there seems to be something like bisexuality as well.

I recently read that in other fandoms (I think it was Vampire Diaries) they have very heated discussions about several m/f-pairings. I don´t know what´s going on with "Elementary", but I´m sure as long as there´s ambiguity paired with dedicated fans there will always be heated discussions . Which is fine, by the way, as long as no one feels personally offended and dishes out hate..
@"married": Oh yes, I know some gay people who are married to or in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex, for different reasons.. as well as hetero-marriages which broke up after a few months because both realized they made a wrong decision.. for me John being married is no big point in the debate.

Just for the record - I am quite sure that John is not gay. He is clearly interested in a lot of women although quite superficially where most of them are concerned. But this does in no way exclude that he might feel attracted to men as well (or one special man).
Offline
That's it exactly. He's attracted to one man in particular.

I don't think John is attracted to Sherlock, but merely fascinated by him.
I know alot of people love to point out scenes where John has this look of awe on his face when Sherlock does his deductions. Those faces seem more like "How can you know all this? Wow!" rather than "Can we stop the taxi and get it on right now?" LOL That's just me. XD
