On another note: Today I read a quote by Mark Gatiss about coming out still being difficult and LGBT people still not having equal rights. Would someone like him put in all those hints and subtext just for laughs?

It would be pretty weird if he did, at least. I always think that all those hints and the subtext eventually have to lead somewhere... otherwise it's really just joking around and also not seizing a perfect opportunity to make a statement or whatever you wanna call it. If they don't want to make a statement, then why do they give us this subtext continually?
