I know, I'm a very bad girl...

Ok, thanks. I've just heard a little bit about all of those things, and never bothered to pinpoint it. The same debate with people turning off their computers every night versus those who just let it go for a while, it seems. Constant power being too much on it makes sense though… figure just unplug every so often when at the desk from now on, then. (and for the record, I'm also pretty bad… one of those types who only actually shuts down once in every other while)

We leave no electrical equipment switched on over night, or if we are out of the house...but if I'm in all day, the lap top and TV will be on all day!

Yeah, during the day I usually leave the computer on if it's already on and I'm leaving the room for a while. Although usually I try to put into sleep mode when I do that. Also, you can set your computer to switch to sleep or hibernation mode if it's not used for x amount of minutes, you know? If you have a laptop, it might even have a "sleep" key or a combination of keys to activate sleep mode. Even my external wireless Logitech keyboard has such a key.

I think my laptop does...well, at least it locks itself!

Gaaaaah, technology seems to hate me this week! I had to send my 6 months old HP Photosmart printer for repair because it wouldn't print black anymore despite a new cartridge and a gazillion cleaning cycles.
While it took only four days for them to call me to tell me the replacement printer had arrived, I picked it up today and set it up, and......... the new damn printer has the same damn problem! It's not printing any black, plus I got a few error messages that it doesn't recognize the printhead. I mean, seriously?! How lucky can I be?
I swear I set it up just like I was supposed to, and I'm also quite computer-savvy. I daresay it's not a handling problem on my end. The new printer also squeaks when it prints. So annoying! So I guess I'm taking this one back to the store on Monday. Yay. (Not.)
At this point, I almost wish I could have my money back so I can buy another Canon. I had changed from Canon to HP because my previous printer (which was a Canon) also had issues with the printhead, and I thought I'd try HP for a change. Looks like that wasn't a smart choice.
Grmpf!

Update: my hubby's HP laptop is now returned and fixed!

Re: your comments about 'leaving on'… now do you have those habits more for energy conservation/bill, the life of the computer, or bit of both? Because certainly, I always put mine to sleep, but I always have so much open at a time I'm looking at, it's much more convenient to just put to sleep since I'll be right back to all of it in the morning. Super conservative with turning everything else in house off anyway, just not that, except once in a while while gone to give it a 'break'. Mildly concerned I'll be the cause of it wearing down faster, but… Who knows.
On topic… 'yay' for things being fixed! And 'wtf' at my own annoyance of the day, a little old lady customer I helped went and told a tall tale about me! Although after things cleared up, it was more sadly hilarious than anything else.

Russell, if you unplug the laptop before you put it to sleep for a longer period of time, then it won't have an impact on your energy bill as it'll run on the laptop battery. Although maybe in the long run it means you'll have to charge it more often and thus use more energy after all...
I don't think putting the computer to sleep will wear the computer down itself. It will probably wear down the battery because it means it'll be using power rather than when you switch it off entirely.
Oh, and I've also heard that for Windows 7 and 8 computers, you shouldn't unplug them completely when they're in hibernation mode (i.e. for laptops take out the battery and disconnect the power cord). Apparently Windows needs a bit of power in hibernation mode as well, and forcefully unplugging it could kill your Windows installation. I'm not sure if that's a myth or not, though, and I'm too lazy to google it.

Not sleeping. Obviously.

Well, same here. Weekends can be so exhausting when you're watching too much stupid telly and go to bed early in the morning and stuff.

Sounds familiar to me.

Stupid British telly?

Could be ...

How did you know, Mattlocked? Incredibly stupid British telly. Do you know that tv guy called Steven Moffat? His shows are the worst.

Really terrible stuff. And that guy Gatiss is just as bad.

Gatiss! God, Susi, don't even mention him, please!
