I don't know all the shows. Well the titles, yes, but nothing in particular.

Don't know about Supernatural but everything that Captain Jack touched in Torchwood was gay.

Okay, then it's "Torchwood". I don't know either of these two shows, but I stumble across stuff about them on tumblr occasionally.
Btw, I just had to think of "The Big Bang Theory" where in the first two or three seasons they also did what some people tend to call queer baiting. It's probably not completely compareable to "Sherlock", but in TBBT they also have two main male characters who repeatedly are perceived as being gay and a couple by other people. And then, yes, one of them gets married (to a woman) and the other one stays alone.

Don't forget David and Keith in Six Feet Under. The first season is about David accepting that he is gay but I would say that after that they have problems like every other couple.

Oh yes, Pav...! It's been so long that I saw SFU, I completely forgot about that!

With no AIDS background or something like that ... yes, as Susi mentioned ... can't think of a gay couple on TV or film ... hmm ... there was "My Beautiful Laundrette". The only one that comes into my mind.
There's a male gay couple in the American TV comedy Modern Family, and they're portrayed as two normal (which we all know is just a setting on a dryer, but you know what I mean) people who just happen to be gay, have a home together and an adopted daughter. I can't think of any other TV examples, but I don't watch much sit-com stuff. There is a lesbian character on the drama Chicago Fire, but they've portrayed her as professionally sound but personally f'ed up-- rather promiscuous, and a poor judge of potential dating material. So anyway, she's not partnered.

I was neck-deep in that fandom from 2005, when the movie came out, until Heath Ledger died in early '09, when the shocked fandom kind of disbanded in a major way. BBM was a wonderful short novel and screenplay, but... it was 9 years ago! And have we seen any Hollywood movies the centered around a gay couple's story since? Not that I can think of, not in 9 years! Also, the BBM plot centered around their disfunctional relationship-- even my husband said, over the closing credits, "My God, that was sad!" Jack Twist *died* because of his being gay, and then poor Ennis delMar tried to die of a broken heart.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a more traditional rom-com type of movie with two gay characters? Where no one had to die at the hands of redneck homophobes, or be left to cry themselves to death, or be portrayed as some poor struggling misfit making their way in the cold, cruel world? A little joy would be nice to see, to counteract the angst, anyway. BBM did show us a smattering of joy between Jack and Ennis, especially while they were still up on the mountain, but once they brought the sheep down and had to go back into the world, well, it was pretty cold down there.
BBM was set in 1963 and the subsequent 10 years or so, so as far as society's ideas go, that was, I suppose, ancient history. I'd like to think that 2014 has found us somewhat enlightened, but yeah, it'd be nice to see a gay romance once in a while.

It would, but I don't think we'll get it with Sherlock.

And again, this was years ago, from 2006 on. I think the gay elements in Torchwood were strongly driven by John Barrowman, and if Captain Jack had been played by someone else, the whole show would have happily not included it.

Which is all way more highly typical of what we see on TV. Everyone knows there is no happiness in being gay.... *rolls eyes*
Oh! I just had a thought, how about Queer as Folk, which aired in the US on the Showtime premium cable channel, from 2000-2005 (again, nothing recent). If you guys haven't seen it, it's worth renting from NetFlix. Gay relationships of all kinds, portrayed honestly and joyfully. But QaF wasn't like any other TV drama, since it's sole reason for being was to follow the lives of gay individuals and couples-- the straight characters were actually very marginal in that show, so nothing about it was typical.

It was a brilliant 80s series and I loved it...set in my husband's home town.

So many of these examples we're coming up with were from a decade ago SFU was from 2000-2005. Tonnaree mentioned a gay couple on Glee, and that's current, but the others all seem to be from a while ago.

And are they all American, apart from Queer as Folk?

QaF was actually American. Although the show was filmed in Toronto, Canada, Showtime is an American network, and the actors were both American and Canadian. And yes, all the rest we've mentioned are American, except for Torchwood, at least, I think so.

Oh sorry, that was the American version!
We had a British one!

That's right, you did, I forgot about that. I think the UK version came first. Have you seen the American one, starring the delicious (at that time, anyway) Gale Harold as Brian? He's straight in RL, but OMG, what an actor, he had me from "hello", as the saying goes.

I'm not sure I entirely agree, but nevertheless I thought I'd leave this here:

Just as well it's a joke I guess, otherwise rather under selling Martin.
