Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

This is another one with an unusual pairing. John and Molly. It's AU set after the Fall. John is coping with grief and Molly supports him along the way. Extremely slow build up of the relationship, which adds to the appeal for me. Very well written.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

Good news.

Engazed has finished the sequal to Ten Days.

"The Slash Man"
http://archiveofourown.org/works/949101/chapters/1854825

"After ten days of unspeakable torture at the hands of Sherlock's worst enemies, John Watson has returned to Baker Street to live with a man whose death, no matter how fake, still haunts him. But his recovery is not easy, his friendship with Sherlock is strained, and a dangerous but hidden menace continues to threaten them both."

Is it rated explicit for violence? Asking because you put it in the non-slash thread?

It's not slash.  Lots of violence and violent imagry.  Also depictions of sexual assault.

And I said "dangerous" and here you are.

You. It's always you. John Watson, you keep me right.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

I hope this is the right place not only for posting recommendations, but also for asking for them.

Have any of you found any good fics about how Sherlock came to meet Molly and Mike Stamford and made his way into Bart's to work there? It's a scenario I've been pondering lately and I'd like to know what other people have come up with.

Please only gen stuff, no slash and no romance (Sherlolly) beyond canon.

Thanks!

Sherlock is a ghost as you might guess. I can't believe I'm reading this only now! It's really great, especially if you want to have a break from all the angsty post S3 fics.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

If someone is interested in Mycroft/OFC I can recommend the "Cate and Mycroft Stories" series. It's so intelligent and well written, I was immediatelly in love with it.

So, in that other "could Mary have fallen for Sherlock" thread someone ;-) said

Sherlock Holmes wrote:

There's a number of decent AU style fics where Sherlock and Mary are a couple.

Would like to try one of those, any recommendations? :-)

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

Hope I'm in the right thread.
I'm in the process of reading this gorgeous fic entitled White Tulip, by withoutawish on AO3.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/3699395
The fic is based on The Sign of Three. It is NOT a fix it kind of fic, rather a "wreck it even more" fic (quoting the author here, but I thought it was a rather brilliant tag). Be wary of the tags, by the way, they're here for an excellent reason.
I personally would advise reading it whilst listening to Michael Price's first album. Stock up on the tissues, there's a fairly high risk of crying.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

Two of GoldenUsagi's stories (http://archiveofourown.org/users/GoldenUsagi/pseuds/GoldenUsagi/works?fandom_id=133185) have already been mentioned (Boredom Untold and Most Ghosts are Idiots), but I'd like to say that I like everything I've read so far. In particular "Genius of the Bottle" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1718333) which is one of the most beautiful love stories I've read in Sherlock fandom. GoldenUsagi's Sherlocks are surprisingly close to the show, given that most of them are mythical creatures.

Another big favourite of mine: AJHall's "Rigging Screws, size 1 3/8 inch, galvanised"(http://archiveofourown.org/works/193527/chapters/284906) It's a wonderful, realistic-sounding casefic (as in: it looks to me as if the author had experience with boats) told strictly from the client's point of view. I was hooked from the first sentece:"If some idiot charterer had known the first thing about galvanic corrosion, Marjorie Jameson would never have discovered her husband was a murderer."

(There's also a short sequel: Rigging Screws DVD bonus extras http://archiveofourown.org/works/764483/chapters/1431790 but that should maybe in the Johnlock thread.)

Another wonderful story by AJHall (a bit less realistic than Rigging Screws - on the other hand, who knows what they did do in Baskerville...): The Four Paw Problem (http://archiveofourown.org/works/127493) (for cat lovers only).

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

I absolutely second Kitty's rec for "Rigging Screws". The POV character is a brilliant and totally believable creation, Sherlock is so IC that it boggles my mind, it's marvellously clever, exciting AND funny, and John makes the greatest entrance into a fanfic story that I've ever read, I think.
I kind of use this story as a yardstick for just how good casefic can get.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

More good case fics:

Teej: A Dish Served Cold (http://archiveofourown.org/works/172083/chapters/251178) where Lestrad's Wife gets kidnapped. There's also a funny little sequel which describes a missing moment from the Christmas scene in ASIB (http://archiveofourown.org/works/332452)

Probably anything written by Pargoletta (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Pargoletta/pseuds/Pargoletta/works?fandom_id=133185) but so far I've only read
Nearer My God, To Thee
Soul by Soul and Silently
and I'm half-way through Firebug

Proper Genius (Detective Shoes) is not exactly a casefic (at least in my book), but a very poignant story.

"Medium Dark" is published, http://archiveofourown.org/works/4574895, another wonderful casefic by Owlcroft and Paula Douglas.

I can fully recommend everything those two have written!
