Here's something I didn't understand in the last episode of series 3 of Sherlock. When Mary was pointing the gun at Mergusson, why didn't she shoot him? I mean yeah I get that she shot Sherlock for him to shut up but afterwards, why didn't she shoot Mergusson and kill him? Was she afriad that when the cops come they'd suspect that Sherlock shot Mergusson? Was she afraid that one of his men would reveal her secrets after his death? What was she basically trying to do or prove? Was Mergusson essential for Sherlock at the time? If someone would just be kind enough to clarify what exactly happened that would be nice. Thank you all. I'm a first time participant.

The explanation was that she was protecting John. John had broken in and would have been surrounded by a dead CAM, a critical ill Sherlock and an unconscious PA & bodyguard.
Her thinking was that Sherlock wouldnt say anything to protect John and that CAM wouldnt say anything to the police as he would rather use the information on her as blackmail.
Basically doing what she did she protected John and brought herself some time.

What I wasn't sure of was what the nature of Magnussen's hold over Mary. Obviously, he knew about her past: was she in danger of going to jail for killing people if it was for the CIA? They're American, and the US and UK are allied with each other?
Or would she be arrested for leaving the CIA and disappearing?
