Yeah, it's literally a direct modernisation. I wouldn't get too bogged down in it. And it's true that you hear about these things on the news. Stuff getting leaked out, things going missing. Even on memory sticks.
Sorry to break your bubble that this would "never happen" but this hasn't just come from nowhere. It does actually occur occasionally.

Those people were trying to steal data...the guy in the story did it accidentally. If you aren't trying to do so, it won't happen.
