....why would he even bother knowing [how to drive]? But if you think about it, it could very well fit with him, too... keeping up certain skills just in case they come up as needed for his work (just like canon Holmes). So it's not that much of a stretch for him to be able to command a car in a pinch. You wouldn't exactly want a stranger driving you to a highly curious location and asking about it.
Maybe I've just read too much fan fic, but aren't Sherlock and Mycroft orginally from the country? Isn't there some kind of country estate where Mummy holds forth, where the kids were raised? If so, that'd be a good reason why Sherlock would know how to drive. I don't know if there's any actual canon about it, but if they weren't city kids, driving around on the estate and then around town and stuff would be very common, even necessary.
In canon Sherlock Holmes is no stranger to driving a cart.
Jump up here. All right, John; we shall not need you. Here’s half a crown. Look out for me to-morrow, about eleven. Give her her head. So long, then!”
He flicked the horse with his whip, and we dashed away through the endless succession of sombre and deserted streets, ..... until we were flying across a broad balustraded bridge, with the murky river flowing sluggishly beneath us......Holmes drove in silence...
-The Man with the Twisted Lip
As of Watson, I think there isn't any description of him driving.

I know, right? Look up caring in the dictionary, and there's a little picture of him. He even killed a guy to save Sherlock, for cryin' out loud.

My roommate says this image is the perfect example of 'people seeing what they want to see.' We all know that he's not actually grabbing his hand, that he was grabbing the badge, but I say to my roommate "Piss off."

I'd say your roommate is right. And I'd say you're even more right.
