I cannot remember how I first got to know Sherlock Holmes. As children, we used to play detective Holmes. We knew about the name, the hat, the magnifying glasses, a coat with checked pattern, and we were always searching clues to solve crimes. I remember it being a theme of a birthday party when we were maybe 8 or 9 years old. I liked detective stories, and the name and character of Sherlock Holmes kept appearing in those stories. I didn't know he was from London until much later, and I had no idea Watson existed, and I didn't know anything about Arthur Conan Doyle or the existence of the original stories. Holmes was just a common character for me like e.g. Mary Poppins, but one that felt more historical than fictional.

- new exciting London locations

Hmmm... what I wouldn't like to see? That's easy:

1) Babies.
2) Moriarty.
3) Babies.
4) Moriarty.

I'm amenable to anything else I think

Ah, I've found the thread
I'd love to go as well, also not alone, preferably... I'd also love some kind of meetup - especially as the forum people I *have* met so far were really nice
how do you actually prebook tickets? I always just got my tickets for a West End theatre on the very evening of the show, but apparently that's not the only way to get them?

Because everybody expects Mary to die, I've thought, what about her and John falling apart over something (I mean, they obviously have had a hard time already). Mary would live, but somewhere else far away, and be out of the story. John could then move back in with Sherlock, or not. And the child... well, I won't like it one bit, but in the above scenario, Mary could just take the little girl with her, and John would go there on weekend trips... and that's it. It's not elegant, but less predictable than killing of the child first thing in the new series.

Really, of all things, I don't get the baby. From the reactions here on the forum, nobody is keen on having Marys child around for the next series, also it wasn't exactly necessary to have a pregnant Mary for this series (I do think John would have cared about her alone just as much). So why have a pregnant Mary at all? It adds nothing to the story, imo, and therefore I just don't understand it.

Yep, I had an eye on it for ages, and when I checked two days ago and saw the price finally dropped, I immediatly ordered it. Looking forward to watching it!

(I ordered it via amazon.de as UK import, then you don't even need a credit card!)

I've read the "review" and while I don't like the way it's written, many points have crossed my mind, too. There are of course parts where I will stand back and admit: it's just a show, and my expectations were (maybe too) high or it's just not my cup of tea. But there are also parts where I still honestly think: that wasn't necessary and could have been done better. And if many people point on the same scenes, then maybe these specific scenes didn't deliver as well as hoped for. I think such criticism should be allowed, and it doesn't necessary mean people are too obsessed with something. It just shouldn't be overrated, because in my opinion, there were also loads of brilliant scenes, which I for my part loved and adored. What I don't like about the review is that it focuses mainly on the negative experience, which doesn't do the series justice as a whole, imo. Also it annoys me that the writer of that review seems to think nobody put any effort into the series... which really isn't a fair thing to say, because we all know they did.

Sometime in early december I had a dream about living in a cottage with Sherlock, and planning family. I liked that dream. Really funny, because my dream cottage nearly matched the house we see in HLV.

And yesterday I had a dream about a hiking tour in the scottish highlands, where I got lost somewhere on the moor and it got dark and rainy and I was starting to worry, but then I heard Sherlock's voice and he gave me directions, using/showing me his mind palace I didn't like waking up ;)

2. His Last Vow
3. A Scandal In Belgravia
4. The Great Game
5. The Blind Banker
6. The Hounds of Baskerville
7. A Study In Pink
8. The Sign Of Three
9. The Empty Hearse

I've got a few here, with nobody recognizable, so I think it's okay to share them here... the room number still irritates me, we should ask for 221 next time...well, and there's proof of far too much food and of course the Very Important TV

In my opinion, it added even more depth to Benedicts voice... not that it doesn't have loads of that already :D

The mindpalace scene is something like seven minutes I think, so it shouldn't be possible... but it feels that way nevertheless ;)

Yes... and by now, we were already nervously sitting in front of the TV

It truly feels ages ago, but I've also had a really good week because of the perfect start into it I also told everybody about our meeting, how good it was, and I teased 3 flatmates with His Last Vow bits and pieces until they all went and watched it, so I have even more people to discuss with

And, I do confess it, I've watched HLV every single evening since last weekend, so I really should know it by heart now, but the mindpalace scene and the end still leaves me breathless every time XD

1. I remembered that I've always liked Sherlock Holmes. (When I was a child, we would put clues somewhere, then pretend we had forgotten about them, and then would "discover" them and spend the day rescuing each other from danger^^ But I only remember being Holmes or a victim/client, we never played John ;) I think we just generally played "detective Holmes", without caring much about the books. Magnifying glasses and the hat of course.)
2. I watched one episode a day for two or three months (I did a survey with a question "more than five"? and laughed, I think it's rather more than fifty times I've seen each...)
3. I fell in love with London all over again and visited some places featured in the series.
4. Prior to Into Darkness, I watched everything Star Trek for the first time in my life and really enjoyed it
5. I fell in love with this fandom which is grown up, funny and adorable, with great people who honestly care about quality and are generally quite clever and creative... oh, and I still don't understand how tumblr works, but I adore it ;)
7. I got to know about 1000 different ways to survive a fall from a tall building. Useful.

I like it that it's being discussed.

I only know that I do want Sherlock to end at some point. And I think there is a natural ending point, when all the canon stories have been explored and been used on screen in various ways. As long as there is good stuff left, I would like them to do it and to continue. But when the good stuff is done, I really would like them to end the whole storyline in a nice, elegant but definite way.

I don't think aging actors and schedules will be a problem. I fear far more for the quality of the show. I think Sherlock will always have an audience now, and there might be quite a temptation just to feed it to the very very (bad?) end. To me, something like six series feels good right now. Still something to look forward too, but an end in sight.

I know that sounds painful - but I really don't mind the waiting

I do agree to the paragraph about much fan service and not so much case solving. I haven't seen much Dr. Who though (wow), so I cannot judge in which ways this could turn bad for Sherlock.

Also, I do wonder if it doesn't get boring for the actors to act the same role for a long time.

They did a side by side comparison of the staircase in Sherlock's mind palace and the one in ASiP.  Extremely similar.  Telling that the staircase is from his first case with John.

Yes In ASiP, he leaves John standing upstairs, and leaves without him. This time, he remembers him, and climbs back up, for him. That comparison is really beautiful

Can I just say: in my opinion they had the perfect ending right there. Sherlock being on the plane, the plane is in the air, Sherlock looking out of the window - that's it. We would have been left with a sad feeling, asking ourselves how and when he will make it back. This might not have been as 'thrilling' as (sort of) bringing Moriarty back (which to me isn't all that thrilling, btw). And it also might have been a bit similar to the cliffhanger in TRF, but not quite.
Yes, there would have been another reunion at the beginning of series 4, but it would have been different. Or am I on the wrong track here?

I totally agree. I really thought it would end there. But I am still glad they made the plane come back. Because the episode was just so full of tension, that at the very end I badly needed something to ground me... and the joke about the 4 minutes did that, I don't know, that was the moment when I started breathing again ;) I was grateful for it. maybe it was part of the reason they did it like this?

I would have liked more time to process Sherlock being a murderer, though. As someone mentioned in another thread, there is no time to process this. If that plane wouldn't have turned, there would be loads of questions how this murder could affect Sherlocks work, what it says about his morals, what makes him do it, etc. Now it feels - at least to me - that there was a very easy quick way out, and no room to think about the impact. With Moriartys appearance, the focus shifted immediatly.

Interesting thread, glad I found it.
It's really tough to choose, because I'm convinced, every book we dare read has the prospect of changing our views in one way or another. But there are some where I realised that happened. E.g:

Tolkien,The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings - for realising how powerful yet beautiful fiction can be
Nick Hornby, A Long Way Down - for realising that to live a life is a choice, not coincidence
Michael Ende, Momo - because listening, really listening, makes a difference
Helene Hanff, 84 Charing Cross Road - what friendship means, and what literature can do

and I would honestly like to add Grimms Fairytales, because that's one of the first books I remember reading in my life, but I need a second because I'm laughing so hard :D
"Sterntaler" made an impression on me as a child, I remember that... I don't know what that's called in English, it's the story about the little girl that kindly gives away all she has to people more in need than her, and in the end the stars fall from the sky and turn into money, and so her kindness is rewarded
