Just feeling terribly silly, because I actually googled for a Sherlock related dating site. First I was relieved there isn't one (well who would go there anyway!), then I realised that the fact there isn't one makes me really lonely (I would go there!). I just thought it would be a brilliant place to meet likeminded people, and would save me the effort of convincing some poor guy of watching Sherlock all day. I then wondered "Is that the point where being single makes you loose your mind?" I'm not even the desperate single type, I just thought the idea was brilliant (it being such a huge fandom with loads of singles possibly)... but well, maybe not. At that point I ate several chocolate bars. It then occured to me that on such a community there would be only girls probably. And it then occured to me I wouldn't even mind that so much. And that's when I made myself a strong tea, and decided to hurry to work to really get my mind off things...
but tell me anyway if you know of such a community I'd be delighted :D

@PhantomLady:
Glad to hear your emails didn't end up wrong. I would feel nervous and worried as well! I hope you don't let "advise" like that get to you the wrong way. Any chance she was just trying to help but didn't know the right things to say? In any case, I hope there is a good solution for you! Maybe you can meet s.o. different at the job center?

I don't understand how it works with the chat room?
I've never been able to use it properly, no matter when I tried. It just keeps adding my name several times to the chat and then crashes. Or asks me to sign up to some RumbleTalkScheme. Each time. What am I doing wrong?

Just curious--- w/out TV, how did you find Sherlock?

A friend of mine said, I have this tv series on dvd, let's watch it. We did watch one episode, then I made her watch the others with me, rest is history.
Most people do watch TV, and they talk about it. Friends approach me telling me they've watched something I might like. Or they speak about something that sounds interesting and I go looking for it. Or I just randomly browse the net for good dvd/ film reviews and get what sounds promising. No need for TV

Oh, it's good to read some of you don't do TV either. I'm living without TV for ten years now... I don't miss it. Actually TV was never popular in my life. When I'm at friend's places and watch TV there, I always get bored. I just miss documentaries sometimes. DVDs are so much more fun.

One note in defense of technology.  Without it most of us would've never met.

I'm not so sure about that ;)
I was a fan of many things before the internet took over my life. Fan life did work, if slightly different than now. But it could be international even back then. It's not about the technology, it's about the passion and desperate need to find like-minded people! I mean, I really like checking tumblr, twitter, forums... but that doesn't mean that going to Harry Potter parties (announced by flyers) in your local bookshop dressed up as Hermione or Ginny was less fun :D
Just saying... maybe we all would have met anyway. On a Sherlock set. A convention. Just on the street wearing our t-shirts. The internet is just making things a lot easier Just imagine if every Reichenbach theory would have been exchanged by letter!! The mail would have collapsed!

I think my mum doesn't even know that caps lock are possible on a mobile :D
I'm not sure if people who don't spend time on internet platforms/chats know all the communication rules. It's an agreement on interpretation by a certain group. I know that capitals mean shouting in written communication, but I never really understood why it is used and where it comes from and I don't use it myself at all.

I always have to laugh when my mum sends me texts. She uses T9 (predictive text) but doesn't change the words. So I sometimes have to retype the words to find the meaning I think it's funny

Hey, at least I'm very good at giving away Sherlock DVDs!

that's impressive! I envy your generosity!

I ruin myself to buy Sherlock DVDs for others so I can watch my own and people don't take them away from me all the time. And it took me three months to give them out to a friend to watch, and I wanted them back the next day, she didn't understand it at all...
But I would share now... I think?... not sure.................

Whisky, you can ask your bookstore if they would get it for you, the majority of bookstores have now this possibility.

Might be true, but they told me it's hard on their business to do such "extra" import from UK and they once even told me to get it from the internet instead. The only ones who would do it (as customer service I suppose) are the big bookstore chains I think which I also try to avoid. (still better tham amazon of course) I cannot judge if what they say is true because I'm not a bookseller. If I think about it hard, maybe I shouldn't import UK books. Shipping and such, environment, etc etc. But where to start and to stop
We could also just share a book and send it round, I'd love that (as well as generally swapping and sharing stuff) but most people want to have things "for themselves" that's the problem.
I didn't want to turn the discussion away from the book itself though!

Yep, sometimes our desires out weigh our social conscience!

You're quite right there.
But shouldn't the choice be "I don't wear clothes because I don't want to support the bad way they're made and brought to me", but "I still need something to wear how can I actively improve the way it's made and distributed?"
DVDs and books might not be essential for my well-being (well... ahem), but I don't think I'm putting egoistic desire over social conscience if I want to have that book Books aren't themselves bad things, neither are clothes, neither is coffee or chocolate, are they? Avoiding won't change the world, improving does (in most areas at least?).
Maybe that's what you meant anyway?

As the vast majority of my family are in England and my son is in Italy, I make no apology for checking my phone.
At home, it,is always at my finger tips. When I'm out it's always in my car, pocket or bag.
At work I usuallykeep it  either in my coat pocket or in my pigeon hole and just check it every now and then.
If I'm awaiting an important call(e.g doctor call back) and I'm in class, I always explain to the teacher that I will need to take the call.

It's very different if it's family or an important call, I can understand that (I still would make an excuse).
But I don't understand exchanging silly cartoons, games on whatsapp or talking about the evening daily soap with a friend I last saw one hour ago.

This sounds good!

Harriet, the "I avoid amazon whenever possible" is also what I would like to do.

But I find it difficult. Stupid question:
Where do you order your books if you're not in the UK? (I'm in Germany, amazon.co.uk has got the books I need, I don't want to order there, where else do I get them? - the local bookstore isn't really into fan stuff on BBC series)
Same thing with british DVDs really. I don't like amazon, but it IS the easiest option. I'd be glad to know a good alternative. (and preferably one with proper payment options, because I don't do paypal etc)

I'm not really happy about the way smartphones, whatsapp and the whole new technology stuff is taking over, because I really don't like it much (being 28), and I always get frustrated. The choice seems either
a) to join in to keep up, and it's not a choice, it's forced upon you, and I would be doing something I really don't like
or b) to not join in and loose touch with half of the world - friends who forget to include you in their plans because they planned it with whatsapp chats, work arrangements everybody knows about but you, everyday stuff everybody is talking about except me because I just don't have a clue what's popular on whatsapp/facebook/etc
This new technology has a huge impact on my life, and I don't like it at all. I have an oldish "stupidphone" without internet access, no facebook, no twitter, no whatsever is popular right now... and I wish I was 60 and could say: well, I am too old for that you know, but that excuse is hard to make with twenty-something.
I really prefer to phone whenever possible, and that's what I do with my mobile phone. Because phoning is expensive (I'm using prepaid) I will sometimes text, but my phone is just an emergency phone really.
I think Sherlock and John are more up to date than me really.
Is somebody else trying to keep away from all the new technology stuff? I'm really aware it's not a choice anymore, and I really think it does change our way of life, and I'm not sure anymore if most of those things are to our advantage.

When everyone in my life stops answering their phones and their email, I suppose I'll have to join the fray.

I feel that's already happening. E-Mail feels old-fashioned already. And to imagine in my youth e-mail (and the internet) was the most exciting thing ever!! I remember how much money we paid just to browse a few minutes in the www. I'd never thought we would use it the way we do now - without care, without much thought.
