There's one small thing about this that might be interesting to some people.

My sense is that this is a northern expression far more than a southern one. Its certainly English rather than say Welsh or Scottish. But I don't think I've ever heard it from a southerner except ironically.

Which of course could be a nod to the idea that the Holmes family is northern-I've seen that idea in spin off fiction and so on before (thus the writers will be aware of it). I think it is based on there being a town called Sherlock or Mycroft or something somewhere in the north? (making Sherlock and Mycroft's parents the forerunners of the Beckhams)

hello back!

Like I said on the other thread though I think you'd be better off in London for locations.

Have run into Dr Who filming and the occasional dalek on occasion-Cardiff isn't that big so I think most locals have. And every so often they shut some key road and everyone is annoyed til we find out its for Dr Who, then its "ah that's lovely that is.". But not Sherlock thus far. Although they don't exactly advertise they are there-you do reasonably often see a film crew out and about in Cardiff but it could be for anything tbh and we have a film school here too.

Well tbh Baker Street isn't a residential area at all, it doesn't have that feel.  Its very much a throughfare. I think the Gower Street location (I'm pretty sure it must be Gower Street) is much more plausible nowadays, people do actually live on Gower Street though very very very very rich ones. Not so much invalided soldiers on an army pension. I don't think Baker Street now looks like people would imagine it to be from the stories. Its all (Sherlock Holmes) tourist shops. I guess the "Sherlock Holmes" museum might also have alerted John a little too early as to what he was getting into ...

Also, not sure how these things work but no way can I imagine them being able to close off Baker Street to film, it would be like closing off Oxford Circus.

I did think there should have been a little more surprise from John as to the location of the rooms. A maisonette in Baker Street? No way could that be cheap. I mean I know its a good rate but...Baker Street? Its like living in Oxford Street or something. And a bit of the backstory of how Mrs Hudson managed to aquire this super-desirable real estate would be interesting  (possibly it has something to do with the husband...)

you know, though, I think its mainly filmed in studio in Cardiff, down in the Bay now I believe though I think they used to film up toward Treforrest-that's where Dr Who used to be too.

I guess Cardiff isn't a great stand in for central London. The architecture is really different.

I have also, I am pretty sure, several times, pre Sherlock, eaten at Speedys-its near my parents' house. That would make the location of 221B in fact  gower street, I think? That's just surreal. And ironically for Holmes geeks it runs off Montague Place which is where Holmes was meant to be living prior to moving in with Watson. Bit of a hike to Baker Street though.

Well I hope he does continue, and I hope Sherlock continues for as long as possible. The great thing about the books is that Holmes and Watson do age so there is really no reason why this could not be a pick up put down thing for years.

I also think that the way they are filming it is clever. It means neither the actors nor the crew are  locked into this to the detriment of the rest of the career, and that if filming schedules can't be worked out then that's how it is, the fans have to wait a little longer. Unlike, say , Dr Who where we basically now expect a series of some kind each year and a Christmas special. Although its infuriating to wait so long between series' it does mean that hopefully there's no final limit on how long the show can continue to be made for.

ETA somehow I also find it hopeful that the guys behind it have grown up with and write for Dr Who which is an incredibly long running series. It would be awesome to see Sherlock in 2043! And consistent with canon-he must have been around 70 in his last adventure.

Are you saying, if he'd never been the star?

Obviously it would depend how good the actor was, but I'd have thought so

I think he's a good actor and no criticism of him but honestly, for me its the scripts that do it. They are great scripts. He is absolutely Sherlock now, no doubt, but I can think of other actors who could also have played the part well.

I think if he did a Dr Who and became a different actor, well that would be weird. But they did it with the Jeremy Brett series-Dr Watson just changed actors between two seasons and it was never commented on (well how would you really)

Oh yes and to add too, he's a good actor for the younger generation I think. My ten year old son liked the one or two episodes he's seen (its an adult show, yk?) and its got him hooked on the canon which I appreciate. I think the other series which are basically heroic old men in crinolene (well, yk) aren't that exciting for a kid.

I am from London, in the UK and grew up round the corner from Baker Street

I now live in Cardiff

Obviously, I have a good time spotting locations but its slightly surreal to have a part of Cardiff I know well pretending to be a part of London I know well (have same going on with Doctor Who)

Cardiff violins is my local violin shop! I play violin/viola. Although my violin is called, er, "the violin". They are not cheap but they are very nice-and their instruments are good quality. If you are in the area its certainly worth going and trying out some of their instruments, they have amazing try-out rooms.

They are also good at getting a violin to sound better. Yes if you've been playing a while you know of people who can do it cheaper and as well but if you are a beginner/intermediate or visiting the area they are a good place to go. And very nice to kids (my kids play the violin also)

okay thought I'd better introduce myself then. I'm beekeeper. I've always really liked the Sherlock Holmes stories but for the adventure and storytelling, not the crinolene so I'm very fussy about adaptations.

Have to admit I didn't expect to like the BBC Sherlock but am now pretty hooked! I also really like that its set in London and filmed in Cardiff-I'm a Londoner living in Cardiff so I recognise most of the locations between the two, which is sad but fun.

What I really appreciate about Sherlock is the emotional literacy. If you read the canon, Holmes is basically a bit of a pain. He is rude, socially inept and fires guns at the wall. You don't really get that, I think, in any of the other adaptations. You don't get Holmes as a PITA and you don't get the whole question of "why on earth does Watson put up with him?". I am so pleasantly surprised at how loyal to the books the series is.

Anyway. Looking forward to reading and posting.

The two Sherlock Holmes wrote himself are pretty rubbish IMO (is it the Mazrin Stone and the Blanched Soldier?).

And the Valley of Fear...that's the only Sherlock Holmes story I have to confess I never got through.

I have to say I think the earlier stories-the Adventures, Memoirs and Return-are by far the best overall.
