That got me thinking about why this version was so much more understandable to me. I wonder if it's because they don't have to shout. On stage, actors have to project and - to my mind anyway - it's more difficult to express quiet emotions like sadness or sneaky evil when they're also concentrating on getting their voice heard by the back row.
That's probably a little too facile, but there were moments during RIII when I thought, "He/she would never be able to get that emotion over as well on stage."

It is a very different kind of medium and film lends itself to subtler nuances, that is true. But a well-trained actor does not have to shout to be understood. I have often wondered how soft they can speak and still be heard. But there are some things - like the moment when Richard turns to the camera and silently raises an eyebrow - that would not work in a large theatre.

Coming up from the floor for a moment: the prosthetics look amazing. And amazingly uncomfortable.
When I look at the prosthetics, part of me is amazed that someone's body could take that shape and winces at how painful it would have been, but another part of me is fascinated by how a body should become that shape and still basically function.
And that magazine cover is very, very nice!
