Hello from Canada

Hi Everyone,

I am a Sherlock fan from Canada.  Just got Netflix and had heard about the show through word of mouth and reading bits online.  My hubby and I watched all the episodes in about 2 days and I fell in love with the show - totally in love!!!

I thought I would join this group.  I like the diversity of the fans on here.  Is anyone else from Canada?

Just a bit about myself - I am a retired school teacher.  My hubby is a retired newspaper editor/reporter and a published author of 9 books.  We live in a medium size city in the province of Ontario called Sarnia.

We travel a lot.  And although it is stereotypical of Canadians - we are also big into hockey, but just our local hockey team (my husband is on the team's executive and the team historian).

I was a newspaper reporter before becoming a teacher (and I also was a librarian and a media specialist as well in my checkered career).

We have been retired about 5 years now and love it.

I studied film, history and English in university and love going to films.  I also love really good TV - which brings me around to the reason I registered today on this forum... Sherlock.

It is one of the best I have seen in a long while.  I feel really excited when I think of sitting down to watch any of the episodes.  Since being introduced to it I can't seem to stop thinking about the cleverness of the writing and the absolute beauty of the acting on the show.  Just remarkable.

I hope to get to know everyone on here better and I look forward to seeing more Sherlock (Season/Series 4) and having interesting discussions on this board.

Re: Hello from Canada

Welcome! I'm a fellow Canuck. I'm currently from somewhere out west, but I've been to Sarnia and could quickly point it out on a map.

Re: Hello from Canada

Thanks for the warm welcome Sabine and Mary!

Mary- what province are in?  I haven't been out west in a long time but I remember it well.  Hope to get back out there some day.

Re: Hello from Canada

I'd rather not say what province I live in. I'm a rather well known blogger in a particular niche and I prefer to keep some anonymity here. I will say that I'm not in BC...

Welcome! I'm new here as well, but this seems to me as a great place - although it takes up more of my time than I had intended. ;)

Warm welcome, Val! As a non-canadian, I'm nevertheless fascinated by curling - even though I don't know about the rules and don't intend to learn them

Fair enough, Mary.

I don't read blogs but I understand about keeping a low public profile (having a husband who is a writer). Everyone should be accorded the level of privacy that they feel is right for them.

Thanks again everyone for the welcome.

I relish the challenge to keep busy on this forum.  When I get hooked on something I can be a bit obessive about it and I definitely am HOOKED on Sherlock (and Cumberbatch) so I have lots to look forward while getting used to the lay of this board.

I have asked Santa to bring me the three seasons of Sherlock and a few of the other productions that Cumberbatch has been in... and Santa is always very, very good to me, so I expect I will have lots of Sherlock/Cumberbatch to indulge in the coming months.

I have already seen Benedict Cumberbatch in The Fifth Estate, Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years a Slave, Amazing Grace, The Other Boleyn Girl, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, and August: Osage County.  Plus I just saw Hawking on line yesterday (completely blown away by his performance),  Hopefully I can add Wreckers, To the Ends of the Earth, and Parades End after Christmas.

That ought to help tide me over until the new Sherlock episodes make their way to my side of the pond. That and talking about my "addiction" with the rest of you!

Re: Hello from Canada

... Oh, you made me realize that I gave my real (first) name away in my personal details. Exactly what I tell my pupils not to do.

Re: Hello from Canada

Oh dear.  I am sorry about that.  I guess I just come from an environment where using real first names was never a problem (probably a much smaller forum).

I do apologise.  I only looked it up because I am not used to calling people by anything except their real names.

Lesson learned - won't happen again.   Of course that doesn't undo the damage I have done. Gosh! I am embarrassed.

I hope I haven't ruined things on here already.  Again, I am truly sorry.

Re: Hello from Canada

What? No, no, I never meant it in any negative way! Just a bit self-irony. Actually, I thought it was nice of you to go through the trouble of looking at my personal details. It's a very friendly forum here, I think, and your actions fit in perfectly.

I was just amused because I tend to do the things I tell my pupils not to. Just two weeks ago I held a "Be careful" speech because a girl wanted to meet a boy she had met on a forum. I was really concerned about it and asked her to tell her parents and stuff.
Then, the next week, I informed my pupils about the literature project we will do after Christmas. I told them that the author of the books they'll read will visit us at school because she's a friend of mine. When the pupils wanted to know how we met, I had to admit that  met her on a forum.
(This one actually.)

Re: Hello from Canada

Whew!  I'm so glad I didn't upset you.

I do like this forum and wish to contribute my voice to the universe that is "Sherlock".

Still getting the lay of the land here but I love going through all the threads and seeing all the diverse ideas that everyone has concerning all things "Holmesian".

And of course I have found myself completely lost for hours in those threads that contain those wonderful pictures of BC!!!

Re: Hello from Canada

Hello and welcome to the forum Val! I had not a clue when I first joined eons ago, which is why I used my real name. Anyhow, I am not Canadian but I visit Canada regularly with my family and it is a country and people I love. Welcome aboard!

Re: Hello from Canada

Thanks Davina for the lovely welcome message (and your kind words about my country!).

I am having a great time reading hundreds of posts and looking at tons of pictures on this fan forum.  I find it hard to comment yet (seeing how I am such a new Sherlock fan) but I am really enjoying myself getting to know everyone through their posts and have made a couple of comments in a few threads.

Dan (that's my husband) is really happy I have joined too.  Although he likes the show and the actors on it, he isn't into examining every detail of every scene over and over again endlessly.  Now that I have an outlet for my passions about the show, he doesn't have to put up with my non-stop chatter about all things Sherlock and Cumberbatch!
