Clearly Andrew Martin does not like the Guy Ritchie Movies this can be guessed from the title of this piece.
A couple of good quotes from the article:
Guy Ritchie's films:
'...the success of the (original) stories (was attributed to) the passing of the Education Act of 1870, which created a society that "could tackle reasonably difficult material". We are now relieved of that obligation.'
He does however clearly like the portrayal of Sherlock Holmes by Benedict Cumberbatch:
'We can believe that here is a man who "cannot live without brainwork", whereas Ritchie's Holmes is more like a man who can't live without a self-repeating machine pistol.'
