That fic has just about everything I don't like in fic -- the aforementioned anorexic, etc. Sherlock; S/J; ParentLock; and much more and yet I adore it! It's absolutely hilarious! One word: "Client."

This is one of the rare fics that I actually PDFed and put on my iPad so I can reread it when the mood strikes me!

The plot idea is embarrassingly stupid, too

But yes, I admit it made me often laugh

Even if some of you don't normally read parentlock, since you like madlori, I can heartily endorse her story "The Blog of Eugenia Watson".  Genie is John's daughter, she's in her mid-teens, and being co-parented by 3 people-- her biological mom, John, who is her biological father, and Sherlock, who is John's partner. They all live together at Baker Street. As I remember, the story is written in Genie's voice, and it's very well done. Unfortunately, like so many of madlori's wonderful long stories, it's never been finished, but it's still okay to read, even though there's no "ending" per se. [madlori's] Note: Work is marked complete for now and is on hiatus, having reached a convenient stopping point. It's hugely long in 28 chapters and wonderfully done. Parentlock and family feels, and yet Sherlock is still 100% Sherlock and John is still 100% John.

After thinking a bit about different OTPs I started to wonder about explicit fanfics about John and Mary. Do those even exist? I know that there are fics about polyamory, but what about fluffy or smut or PWP stuff just about the Watsons?

I came to wonder about it when I thought for the nth time how lucky I am because I read Johnlock. If you don't, your options are rather limited. There are those very very few good bromance fics and you can turn to Sherlolly, but what about the pairing that actually IS a couple?

First rule of any fandom.  If it exsists, there is porn about it.

I have seen Mary supporters complaining about that so I think that there is really next to nothing in that regard. Which is no wonder to me - we have discussed again and again how there is no real chemistry between them. And so many people love the show because of Sherlock, Johnlock or no. I suppose a love story between John and Mary would exclude Sherlock in some way or other and I do not think that there are many people who want to read this.

Interesting.  The pairing that appears to have the least fan fiction is the only pairing that actually exsists on the show.  Mmmmmmmmm

That's your opinion. There are supporters of this pairing but none of them wrote a fic about it? Not that I am interested in one ... just wondering. But your explanation, Susi, is a good one.

I am not interested in reading one, too.

Just curious about the fact that there are basically none. At first I thought it was because it lacks the magic of falling in love, first kiss and stuff. Then I realized that their relationship leaves so many possibilities to write about all thatbecause we barely know anything. But still ... There are fics about Mystrade and Mrs Hudson's marriage, but non about John and Mary.

I remember reading a tumblr post by a Mary supporter who complained about finding about ten fics in that category. There are some fics having Mary, John, and Sherlock, fluffy or hot, but just the two of them, not really.
I think the problem here is the missing suspense. They have found each other and are married after all while in most fics - be it Johnlock, Sherlolly, Mystrade - there is the excitement of meeting/losing/finding/convincing/seducing/fighting for each other. And this is just what Warstan (I think that is what it is called) is lacking.

Warstan? Already the name puts me off. It sounds so ... tough. Nothing warm or even mysterious in it.

I know, that's awful, isn't it?

The show is called Sherlock, and I think most people who watch it are mostly interested in him.  And then, aside from that, the writers/showrunners/actors have woven johnlock through each and every scenario in every episode of the whole show, so naturally johnlock fic would dominate in the fan fic world. The show didn't paint Mary in a positive light, plus most fans believe John belongs with Sherlock anyway (whether it be slash or just friendship), so I don't think the idea of Mary and John sparked anything in anyone enough to start writing fan fic about them. Just my take on that.

I am not surprised at all.

In the original canon, only one story - out of 60! - was about Mary and John and the rest (with the exception of "The Adventure of Blanched Soldier") were about Sherlock and John and their exciting adventures. This means that even in the BBC version, which is heavily based on canon, you have no foundation on which to build a believable Mary - John romance, but a lot of situations which you can read as Johnlock if you want to.

You simply cannot pull those things out of thin air. There must be something in the story that connects those characters together. Here you have almost nil connection between the characters of John and Mary despite them being depicted as husband and wife. Any romance between them therefore feels very artificial compared with rocky, but interesting and warm relationship between Sherlock and John.

-----------------------------------

I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

I find it hard to conjure up feelings of warm, fuzzy "romance" about two people between whom so much relationship crap exists. So much secrecy and lies, hidden agenda on Mary's part, and then she went and tried to kill Sherlock, for crying out loud!  And John's supposed to warm up to that?  If he can't warm up to it-- and we know he struggled, given the Xmas scenes we were given--  then the viewers can't be expected to warm up to it either. The idea of romance between Dr. and Mrs. Watson just doesn't exist to me, so I wouldn't be interested in reading about them in fan fic.

Just got done wtih a fairly long fic.  It was a good story but I was dissapointed in the ending.  But that's not what I'm here to talk about.  There was one major mistake that just kept being repeated over and over again.  She had the layout of 221b totally wrong.  John and Sherlock would be in the sitting room and talk about going "upstairs" to Sherlock's bedroom!  The first time it happened I thought it might have just been a slip.  But then they were in Sherlock's bedroom and talked about going DOWN to the sitting room.  I know it's a little thing but it drove me crazy.  It took me out of the story for a moment each time.        /end rant/

Oh, the layout of 221b drives me crazy when writing myself. I am pretty sure that I avoided a similar blunder only because Susi noticed when beta-ing that fic. ()

But basically the ONLY thing I understood is that John's room is upstairs.
