Alone on the Water was the first fan fic I ever read. I'd seen so much talk about it on Tumblr and wanted to know what this thing was and it was devastating. Prior to that, I didn't even know that fan fiction even existed. That fic, and PIALR seem to be the "must read" fics of the fandom. Both written by Mad Lori. She's like the Queen of Sherlock Fan Fic or something ;)

As far as AUs go - I really REALLY like the Tennis series' too though.

But as you guys have mentioned, if Sherlock or John die in the fic, I don't want to read it. I've read a couple that have been okay but I generally don't like those fics. I don't like fics where any of the beloved characters die - be it Molly, Lestrade, Mycroft whoever. Though I guess I could cope if it were Anderson!

I"m with you on the cheesy Solar.
And I can totally appreciate dark endings. Some of my favorite movies are very dark.

It's only in my johnlock that I can't handle a major death. Fan fic is kind of a comfort thing for me. So no matter how beat up or bruised they get I just want them alive and with some hope at the end.

Yup, I am glad to have read it, but I think Alone on the Water is probably the only one I'll read on THAT subject. And I also really appreciate the fact that fanfic authors seem to be conscientious about tags/warnings for their stories so that all the fans can follow their tastes from tennis to tentacles, I suppose :-)

I prefer the boys running about and solving cases and just being their fabulous selves!!

(Almost entirely unrelated footnote: I just sat for my Specialist in Wine exam for which I had to memorize wine districts from around the the world...It was easy to memorize the wine district in Mendocino County, California becuase many of their wines are pretty dull and the name of the district is Anderson Valley. I just thought of Sherlock's Anderson, and voila: memorably dull. )

Oh, apart from dark endings I'm also addicted to hurt/comfort stories. Lots of hurt, lots of comfort, that's what I like.
I think "Alone on the Water" is a pretty special case, because you just know from very early on how it's going to end. So the author really leaves the reader the choice: do you want to go through with this until the very end, or would you rather not? For me it's much more difficult to take when you read a story and don't have the slightest clue until almost the very end that something is going to go terribly wrong...

And this goes off topic, but would you name some of your favourite movies? I'm curious now...

Heavenly Creatures.

And that's just skimming the serface. I'm a movie junkie. I wish I could just show you my Netflix que so you could see how eclectic my tastes are.

I also love musicals and Science Fiction.

Ah, very nice, tonnaree! I got all of them on DVD (except for "Heavenly Creatures") and just watched "Seven" again last weekend.

Seven, Heavenly Creatures, Brokeback Mountain - those films are amazing. Still have to watch Memento and The Hours.

Oh yes, Brokeback Mountain. It was one of the rare occasions, a movie touched me with such impact, that it took several days to overcome the sad feelings. But it's a kind of movie I am able to watch for one time only.

I think I only got about half way through Brokeback Mountain. It was basically PWP with homosexuality as far as I could tell. Got boring and repetitive.

There is no kitsch in it at all, IMO. And it is not very smutty either. They take quite a long time to accept their feelings for each other and find it hard to reconcile themselves with the fact that they are gay or at least bi-sexual. Sometimes I even wished for more feelings because Heath Ledger remains quite reserved. It is mainly a film about unspoken feelings and the end is very moving.

I totally agree, Susi. No kitsch, not cheesy at all. I found the story quite arresting.

And do watch Memento and The Hours, Susi, they are both such great movies.

Well, back to topic, shall we?

Solar mentioned, she don't like cheesy endings. I agree with that. I love Johnlock stories but what I don't like is a marriage between John and Sherlock. That's mostly very cheesy and OOC, especially because in many stories Sherlock is the one who makes the proposal (although it's a bit funny when he tells John how very logical a marriage wold be ).

What do you think about the marriage stuff (between John and Sherlock)?

Don't like it either. Too much IMO.
I remember one single story where it somehow fitted. Fine with me. But in general I'm perfectly fine without that kind of "happy end".

I think it's in character when it happens because Sherlock cracks the shits about not being allowed in John's hospital room. But tbh I can't see either of them particularly caring about 'legitimising' their relationship.

Totally agree with this assesment.
I'm rereading one of my favorites right now and John is the one that brings up marriage because he's not allowed in the hospital with Sherlock and waits hours not even knowing if he's alive or not. They don't have a big wedding and don't make a big deal of it. Both of them agree that it makes sense for them agree that it's a practical thing to do because simply because of the legal aspects.

I don't think I've come across more than one or two wedding stories. Not enough to annoy me.

In general, for me wedding stories fall into the same category as stories with them having children: simply something I don't need when reading Johnlock.
