Hey girls,

do you have favourite song lines? That are especially funny, poetic or are just a great statement?! I have a lot.

I will start with two from recent songs.

Christina Perri "Jar of hearts"

You're gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul

Coldplay "Every teardrop is a waterfall"

I'd rather be a comma than a full stop

Two came to my mind spontaneously

Alanis Morissette, "You oughta know"
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it...

Ahem.

Alanis again "Not the doctor":
I don't want to be the sweeper of the egg shells that you walk upon
And I don't want to be your other half, I believe that 1 and 1 make 2

There are a lot more, also German ones, for sure. Have to think about it.

QUEEN - The Show Must Go On:

"My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly - my friends ..."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John: "Have you spoken to Mycroft, Molly, uh, anyone?"
Mrs Hudson: "They don’t matter. You do."

I BELIEVE IN SERIES 5!

Here's a German one (from "Am Ende denk ich immer nur an dich" by Elemen of Crime). I could quote nearly all their lyrics:

Warum blutet Mutter aus der Nase?
Warum ist ihr Kind so dumm wie klein?
Darf ein metallic-braunes Auto denn da parken?
Und warum kann ich ohne Dich nicht glücklich sein?

And some lines from "Frankly, Mr Shankly" by The Smiths I used to love when I had a job I hated:

Frankly, Mr. Shankly, this position I've held
It pays my way, and it corrodes my soul
I want to leave, you will not miss me
I want to go down in musical history

Susi, you could really quote the whole song from EoC....
Not to forget the chorus:
Ganz egal, woran ich gerade denke
Am Ende denk ich immer nur an dich

Translation? Err....

Our history is nothing more
Than what the losers settle for

From "It's Not Over Yet" in "A Very Potter Sequel" because I am a nerd.

They are very hard to translate because Sven has such a very special style. "Herr Lehmann" has been translated into English. Don't know about the other novels. To me he's one of the great German poets of today.

OMG, I didn't know that there is a connection! I was just like "Hm? Herr Lehmann?" lol
Again learned something new today.

He wrote a trilogy which is quite autobiographic: Herr Lehmann, Neue Vahr Süd and Der kleine Bruder.

Wow, how to choose? There are so many great song lyrics out there...

Well, here's some of my favorites (probably better ones come to my mind as soon as I finish typing):

Fun quote: "I didn't lose my mind, it was mine to give away". (Robbie Williams)

Romantic quote: "This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you". (Don McLean)

"I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance." (Garth Brooks)

Serious quotes: "Just remember who you are and where you've been, you've come so far. And never, ever let them see you fall". (OMD)

"Maybe at the start, we would laugh, maybe at the end we would cry.[...] But in the end, I made them see: This is what Happiness means to me" (Amy McDonald)

"I can say nothing to you but repeat what I heard: Love is just a four-letter word." (Joan Baez)

As for German songs, I really like the beginning of "Demo":
Weiß man, wie oft ein Herz brechen kann?
Wieviele Sinne hat der Wahn?
Lohnen sich Gefühle?

I have thousands. At the moment, one of my favourites is this:
"When you've fallen on the highway
and you're lying in the rain,
and they ask you how you're doing
of course you'll say you can't complain."
(Leonard Cohen, Waiting for the miracle)

"Wie viele Tränen passen in einen Kanal?
Leben wir nochmal?
Warum wacht man auf?"
Very good song.

Oh, Leonard Cohen, of course:

"Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder."

My all-time favourite of LC.

Oh I also have Grönemeyer song lines, from "Ein Stück vom Himmel"

Wer nichts beweist, der beweist schon verdammt viel.  I love it!

and

Es gibt keinen Feind, es gibt keinen Sieg.
Nichts gehört niemand alleine,
keiner hat sein Leben verdient.

Actually the whole song has wonderful lines.

We didn't start the fire
It was always burning
Since the world's been turning
We didn't start the fire
No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it

by Billy Joel

Billy Joel - I think I have all his CDs
My all-time favourite lines by him are:

I don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things
I want you so bad
I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time

John: "Have you spoken to Mycroft, Molly, uh, anyone?"

"You've gone a million miles, how far did you get?
To that place where you can't remember and you can't forget."
(Bruce Springsteen, Secret Garden)

From Michael Jackson's "Scream": "Oh my god, can't believe what I saw as I turned on the tv this evening, I was disgusted, all the injustice, all the injustice."

Another Leonard Cohen favourite:
"I caught the darkness,
drinking from your cup.
I said, is this contagious?
You said, just drink it up."
