Thanks, Davina -- this has got to be the first time I've ever wished I was Queen Elizabeth!

As the Royal Film Performance 2012, The Hobbit joins an oddly mixed bag of predecessors (which does not include any of the LotR trilogy).  Note that one need not be royal in order to acquire tickets, and the proceeds help support members of the film and television community in times of personal hardship.

Ben related but you know...

"Benedict Cumberbatch Went Berserk Playing The Hobbit’s Smaug"

"Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is to The Hobbit's Smaug as Andy Serkis is to Gollum. "It’s very freeing, once you put the suit on and the sensors. I’ve never felt less encumbered, actually," Cumberbatch says of the stint as a motion-capture dragon. "You just have to lose your shit on a carpeted floor, in a place that looks a little bit like a mundane government building." With the second of the three Hobbit films titled The Desolation of Smaug, plan for lots of Cumberbatch shit-losing."

LOL omg can you guys picture it??

Oh goodie -- dragon shit all over the carpet!

Just found a couple of nice hobbit photos from Entertainment Weekly's July 2 article.  First, what appears to be a Freeman-as-Baggins publicity still:

And then a(nother) picture of Bilbo in the spider cave:

Really??  Pun intended? I'm still giggling, here...

Yes! I will say it again...what I most look forward to is the behind-the-scenes footage on the DVD of BC crawling about in a motion-capture suit, hopefully growling.  (Is that weird?)

Haha, "encumbered" - good one, Ben

Not weird AT ALL. Same boat right here.

Cheers, Sam! Glad I'm not the only one.
'Encumbered' is the word I use for (my own) fangirliness over BC, and I had to laugh when he used it about himself.

Not sure if this is the best place for this but...

Here's an article about visiting locations in New Zealand where The Hobbit was filmed.  If you read to the end where the article discusses places to stay, it mentions the hotel Martin stayed at.

Greetings from the Frankfurt Book Fair 2012 - The Hobbit is everywhere. Books, audiobooks, games, a giant inflatable book standing outside swaying the wind. Took some pics for you:

And a company even sells instant hot drinks with Tolkien characters. Martin was on the chocolate cappuccino pack. I was quite surprised at the hype.

I've started to see a couple of "The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey" short trailers on U.S. broadcast TV this week,  anticipating the opening of
the movie December 14.  Getting excited!

Some silly advertising appears to be starting in earnest,   the Denny's restaurant chain is offering some Middle Earth menu selections:
