Surely you are no dummy when it comes to Sherlock Holmes!

Joking aside,is it more about the books and Doyle's life or about the fan following of Sherlock Holmes?

I loved Heidi as a child!  I haven't dared to read it as an adult.  No doubt it wouldn't live up to the memory.

@Yitzock...
It covers everything, very extensive.
It's American, so I am kind of having to put up with some Americanisms...who the hell says 'English Empire?'
Surely it's universally known as 'The British Empire'....and there are a few other niggles.
But it has suddenly dawned on me....you know how ACD is criticised for sloppy errors, a bit of cheating in his plots etc?
Well how like Mark and Steven is that?  I had never thought about it before!

I've only ever heard "British Empire" myself. That's a bit weird.
But that's interesting that Doyle was critiqued in that way. I suppose Mark and Steven's style does come from those stories (though it's never bothered me, personally).

Oh sorry, no, I should have qualified...doesn't bother me, either.
Just thought it was kind of ironic.
A bit like when Sherlockians ignore the obvious and invent their own assumptions, without evidence....but that's another thing! Ha.

I didn't meant to imply that I thought it bothered you,  it's OK. But yes, it is ironic. Or maybe it's fitting, since they admire Doyle.

Yes, I'm picking up lots of little Mark and Steven points, while I am reading this book!

I read that play in a French class a couple of years ago! I recall liking it.
I remember we read some scenes aloud in class and the metre made it difficult sometimes, but it sounded nice.

Oh I read The Call of The Wild by Jack London, on my Kobo.
Always wanted to and really enjoyed it.

I'm finally getting around to reading A Study in Scarlet in my illustrated Sherlock Holmes book that's been sitting on my shelf for 3 years. I had not realized that the stuff about the solar system actually came straight from Doyle!

Oh yes.
Martin mentions it on the DVD commentary.

I am reading Good Omens at the moment (I've got just over 100 pages left, so I feel like I'm actually getting close to the end). I have to admit I'm kind of disappointed by it thus far, even though there have been some fun moments. I had entertained the possibility that because the show has such a big Tumblr fandom, that it wouldn't quite live up to the hype, but I still wish I was enjoying it more. It's sort of amusing, but I haven't laughed out loud much at all. I'll see how I feel when I get to the end, but I've found it rather slow and meandering (so many characters!).
I'm a little curious how the story and character were handled in the TV series, and how much may have been changed or updated to our present moment (the way the female characters are described vs male characters, and the use of the r-word in a joke are a couple times when the book feels very dated), but I don't feel in much of a hurry to find out (I don't have Amazon Prime so unless my library gets the DVD or it's available in some other way I likely won't see it anytime soon).

Am I right in thinking this is coming to the BBC soon...or am I thinking of something else?

I think so. It's an Amazon series, but I know BBC was involved in some way and was supposed to air it at some point.
