All I can say in German is...

Re: Languages

I can conjugate regular German verbs and that's about it.

I can also conjugate sein.

ich bin
du bist
er ist
wir seid
ihr sind
sie seid
Sie seid

My French is much more extensive, mais je n'écris pas bien. Franchement, je parle français bien, mais écrier ou parler, ce sont très différents. Mes notes en français sont très bien.

Perfect beginning, Smoggy - but then something got mixed up:
ich bin
du bist
er/sie/es ist
wir sind
ihr seid
sie/Sie sind

(very brave of you to deal with "sein" )

Bis dahin laufe ich mit meinem Schlüsselanhänger in Sichthöhe durch die Supermärkte...

I knew a game: Put a songtext in Google, let it translate and then your friends have to guess, which song it was. Can be fun!

Not sure how this got on the languages thread, but yes, I found delivery from redbubble.com to be a little slow, too. Worth the wait for my t-shirt, however. So allow ample time, and be forwarned that at least the girly-fit tees run small. Fortunately, Irene had warned me about this before I ordered mine.

How could I forget about "bitte ein Bier"?

Ack. See, I can't even conjugate sein. Être is much easier, although from sheer complication it should be harder. It's just the repetition that drills it in.

Re: Languages

221B, I tried writing in Cyrillic (in your introduction thread, actually), but for some reason certain letters are not supported (though not all of them)... it's definitely a coding issue. Maybe we should post this in the "technical" section?
I cannot write Russian in latin letters, I used to know the SMS-style transcript, like "4to" and stuff, but I'm afraid I have forgotten lots of it.
I would love to practise my Russian, don't get much chance these days.

Re: Languages

Today has been a terribly hot, tiring day. I think I have only survived thanks to Federico García Lorca and his "Romancero gitano". And now I want to share my favourite Spanish poem with all of you.
It's impossible for me to translate it, but anyway... this thread was about languages, wasn't it? So here you have one of the most beautiful things ever written in my language. There might be a good translation out there (I can find it, apparently)

Romance sonámbulo

Verde que te quiero verde.
Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre la mar
y el caballo en la montaña.
Con la sombra en la cintura
ella sueña en su baranda,
verde carne, pelo verde,
con ojos de fría plata.
Verde que te quiero verde.
Bajo la luna gitana,
las cosas le están mirando
y ella no puede mirarlas.

Verde que te quiero verde.
Grandes estrellas de escarcha,
vienen con el pez de sombra
que abre el camino del alba.
La higuera frota su viento
con la lija de sus ramas,
y el monte, gato garduño,
eriza sus pitas agrias.
¿Pero quién vendrá? ¿Y por dónde...?
Ella sigue en su baranda,
verde carne, pelo verde,
soñando en la mar amarga.

Compadre, quiero cambiar
mi caballo por su casa,
mi montura por su espejo,
mi cuchillo por su manta.
Compadre, vengo sangrando,
desde los montes de Cabra.
Si yo pudiera, mocito,
ese trato se cerraba.
Pero yo ya no soy yo,
ni mi casa es ya mi casa.
Compadre, quiero morir
decentemente en mi cama.
De acero, si puede ser,
con las sábanas de holanda.
¿No ves la herida que tengo
desde el pecho a la garganta?
Trescientas rosas morenas
lleva tu pechera blanca.
Tu sangre rezuma y huele
alrededor de tu faja.
Pero yo ya no soy yo,
ni mi casa es ya mi casa.
Dejadme subir al menos
hasta las altas barandas,
dejadme subir, dejadme,
hasta las verdes barandas.
Barandales de la luna
por donde retumba el agua.

Ya suben los dos compadres
hacia las altas barandas.
Dejando un rastro de sangre.
Dejando un rastro de lágrimas.
Temblaban en los tejados
farolillos de hojalata.
Mil panderos de cristal,
herían la madrugada.

Verde que te quiero verde,
verde viento, verdes ramas.
Los dos compadres subieron.
El largo viento, dejaba
en la boca un raro gusto
de hiel, de menta y de albahaca.
¡Compadre! ¿Dónde está, dime?
¿Dónde está mi niña amarga?
¡Cuántas veces te esperó!
¡Cuántas veces te esperara,
cara fresca, negro pelo,
en esta verde baranda!

Sobre el rostro del aljibe
se mecía la gitana.
Verde carne, pelo verde,
con ojos de fría plata.
Un carámbano de luna
la sostiene sobre el agua.
La noche su puso íntima
como una pequeña plaza.
Guardias civiles borrachos,
en la puerta golpeaban.
Verde que te quiero verde.
Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre la mar.
Y el caballo en la montaña.

Re: Languages

Just put this in Chat but I think maybe it should go here. At my German lesson tonight I discovered that 'currants' get their name from Corinth (Korinthe). If I didn't learn German I would never have discovered this about something in my own language. I am continually intrigued and fascinated by language(s).

Re: Languages

Right now there is "Gorillas in the Mist" on German TV.
Found this a great movie and bought me the video tape then.  Today it reminds me of the sad, sad time without DVD or internet. We had to watch everything dubbed, no original language possible. How could we survive??
