Maybe it has been Sherrinford all along, and Sherlock has been locked up! The "tantalising clue" could be similar to the one at the end of TAB (that suggests that it's the Victorian version that's "real").

OMFG. Now that could be very interesting!

I would really not like that.
One thing to discover that Sherrinford exists, but it would be quite another for him to have been our Sherlock the whole time.

Though I quite like the idea of a good and bad twin...
And yeah indeed, what about the guy in the morgue who looked like Sherlock?

Yes!

Or maybe Sherrinford (or Sherlock!) was the stand-in used by Moriarty and the corpse used by Molly in TRF? Hence the flashbacks?

Yep.

Ah, cmon guys, it's never twins! (Much)
From the practical point of view, Sherlock can't have an (identical) twin brother because Ben has barely enough time to play one man on the show...

Haha.

Yes, possibly inadvertently.

I kind of like the idea because it ties a few things together ("it's never twins", the fact that Sherlock has a lookalike, Sherrinford, "the other one"). I do think that if it was an identical twin, it would have been obvious. Molly would have picked up on it, surely? But Sherlock may never have seen the body, and Molly may never have told him about the resemblance. Or perhaps he knew he had a twin, and worked out that's who Moriarty would have used.
Also toying with the idea of Mycroft being involved in it ("you know what happened to the other one", "you reptile", the supposedly fake Moriarty handshake).

I'm liking the bit in brackets!

It could have been Sherlock's twin that kidnapped the children in TRF... and the same body that was used as standin for Sherlock...
Or... maybe my old silly theory that maybe Sherlock didn't survive the fall... "Time to go be Sherlock Holmes"

No!

I don't know ... it does seem as if it was Moriarty behind the children's kidnap, using the lookalike ... but yes, could definitely be a possibility. I was thinking more of a colloboration with an evil twin who is bumped off, possibly even by Mycroft (or perhaps Mary under Mycroft's orders - might as well get the whole lot of them in on it!). And Sherlock finding out it about it in S4.
