"What's in a name?"
We've learnt several full names in the last series, including Sherlock's -or should I say William's?
We've also discovered how much John wanted to keep his middle name secret in this series. The fact that he says it in such a desperate way in SIB can be seen (by Johnlockers) as a desperate attempt to signify Sherlock his romantic interest in him, and that Irene should back off. (But they're not a couple and John H. Watson is not gay).
Based on these two characters' reveal, it is implied that a name holds a great significance -it is not given unless that person is extremely important in your life and that you trust them implicitely.
And while John ought to know Mary's real name because she is his wife and supposed to be his significant other, he doesn't, other than her initials which could well be another lie, for all we know.
And to echo Doctor Who's The Shakespeare Code, knowing someone's name may give you power of life or death over this person.
[It just screams Jonhlock, here]

Never thought about that in terms of johnlock. Interesting.
It's Rumpelstiltskin all over. Same with Mary.

Johnlock is doomed! Sherlock actually has the hots for Lestrade!
I knew there was some reason why he calls Lestrade "Garett" or "Graham"!

pahaha!!!!
If anything though, that means that he only thinks Greg is attractive but doesn't have romantic feelings for him

Well, I'm not sure exactly how fit he is, but he is nice.(Graham) We've never seen his flirt with women (Greg), but I'm pretty sure he does enjoy a drink or two when it's the right time and place.

And then there are the very popular MOR names - Moriarty, Morstan, Moran.

If John stays married to Mary-- I could totally ship that.

I've got two (I don't know how much farfetched) theories on two names.
The first is that Greg could be named after the second most common name for popes and the first most common name for popes starting with G (The G is given as his initial in ACD canon), because in total I found 6 clues that equate Lestrade to Saint Peter in S2, who was the first pope, where there are many parallels for other characters in the Bible (you can find it here in the LESTRADE section, somewhere in the middle)
The other, this very farfetched too. is that if you remove vowels from Sherlock and reverse the name is Kclrhs, which looks a bit like Clara without vowels, Harry's ex-wife. I wondered if Harry and Clara could look like John and Sherlock and be foils for them (since John might have fancied Clara and he might fancy Sherlock and his sister harry might look like John). So I was wondering how Clara was named.

Hmmm...I think your Lestrade one is interesting though of course I know idea if any of it is true. But it's an interesting theory. Definitely something I would not have thought of myself.

Two Williams in the bank in The Blind Banker. (As we know there a lot other Williams, but this two are very close and one has also a surname that might mean something)
Sebastian Wilkes: Wilkes was originally a variant of William, Wikipedia says.
Sir William Shad: A William. Also Shad means happy/gay in Arabic, Behind The Name says.
