What bothers me a little bit here is that we more and more delve into backgrounds we're simply not given and try to argue with. Mary has been around for four episodes now. She's most definitely out there to be judged by what we are given in the show or maybe deliberately not.
We do the same with the other characters. No one says "We don't know why Anderson is such a dummy, we don't know his background". It matters, yes, but it's not everything. Especially not with fictional characters in a show.
I have my own feelings why they used Mary's character like they did, and I have my own opinion why she is sold so hard to us and I have my own feeling after TAB in which light she will appear in S4. But that is for me to know.
I like your answers to the questionnaire, GimmeCat, because you do exactly that: you argue with what we're given in the show.

You're such a tease, mrshouse

I actually think in the general debate, it is a totally valid point.
Yes of course we should be able to argue with what we are shown in the show.
But we have to be certain we are arguing about what we actually are being shown and not what we just think is being shown.
There also has to be an acceptance that the Sherlock team are allowed to portray their show exactly as they choose to.

Well...nobody said they are not allowed to. So not what I was talking about.

Aw, no....just don't want to have another outrage here....

Again, depends what we mean by 'outrage'.
Robust debate is healthy.

Absolutely. And I'm all in. But honestly, I don't think what I have in mind on the topic would be very much appreciated for discussion.

I can assure you that I personally would be totally fine with comments you brought here.

HM....sweet.
Edit: UPS, I just noticed that I forgot the little"not" before "appreciated" in my last post but didn't want to just edit it without mentioning it . I meant NOT appreciated before bb's totes-not-personal answer came in.

Well, that does not sound like a healthy debate.

I think speculation is fine .. and we're talking her about how Mary is shown now, not about what we think might happen in S4, aren't we? I'm convinced that there will be a story involving Mary in S4, and that she has to come out of it a heroine or a villain (and probably not come out of it alive!), so I'm more than happy to read about how people think that might pan out. I'd be happy to read your speculations, Mrshouse, either here in or in one of the S4 threads if you think that's more appropriate! (Maybe here is best, if Mary is already a controversial character?).
I agree with Vhanja about the psychopath checklist. It's fun to have a go, but ultimately, having some traits of a condition is not the same as actually having it. Sherlock fits some traits too, but we know he isn't one. And in the end, it doesn't matter, she'll be good or evil regardless (being a psychopath isn't an excuse) - it doesn't matter what profile we can fit her to. She'll still have done those things. I think her movitations are far more interesting, and that's the bit that we're not 100% sure of.
And I do think a lot is unknown partly because the character has been shown so ambiguously. I don't agree that we're shown her planning to get pregnant (for instance) - we just have to guess according to what she does and how the other characters react to her. And I don't like to entirely rule out either side.

Mod's note: BB, please refrain from comments of this kind. Mrshouse has not attacked anyone in here. Therefore your reaction is completely unjustified and detrimental to the atmosphere of this thread.

Perhaps besley made a typo too?

I did and I'm glad somebody thought to ask me that, without jumping to conclusions!
Sorry, I normally would have checked, but I dashed off to hoover...just back, to the usual outrage!
Oh, will now go and appropriately edit.
The internet, isn't it wonderful?!
Amazing there isn't the same immediate reaction when somebody calls my post 'rubbish'.

Yes, but as we still don't know what she did and why she did it, I choose to withhold judgement. (Without Mycroft's influence, I believe Sherlock would've gone to prison for many years for shooting Magnussen, for instance).
Lol, besley, I think it might for the same reason that me calling other people's opinons for handwaving caused an outrage to the extent I was more or less banned from using the word, while no one batted an eyelash when the opinion of us on the "other side" were called "excuses".

Does Mary actually voice her concerns about prison?
Offline
Yes she does. She says something like "I would go to prison for the rest of my life" for what's on the memory stick.
Offline
Thank you, that's what I was trying to remember...
I only remembered the bit about : and you won't love me any more if you read it.
EDIT: checked the transcript.
She says the stuff Magnussen has on her, would put her away for a long time.

I'm wondering if her past will only be swept under the rug, or if we will learn more about it.

I've come over from the Speculation thread and discussion of the limping woman! Mainly because I don't know how the latter fits into this...
But thinking of TAB and consumptive bride...
You don't think Mary has a terminal disease, do you?
Or in her case, is it just that she knows her past will catch up with her and somebody bump her off?
