I agree with most of that. Obviously, I think they've been clear about Johnlock (or the lack thereof), but I think Sherlock and John's relationship will always be at the forefront. "There's always two of us". And my hope/prediction is that they will become closer over S4, rather than further apart, even if there are bumps along the way.
I think maybe a few things are getting mixed up: Benedict saying that it's "complete" and the "end of an era", the series being shocking and devastating, the wish fulfilment, and the groundbreaking thing that they're going to try to pull off. I'm sure all these things are true of S4, but they are not necessarily all about the same aspect of S4. I agree that just because it's going to be devastating, it doesn't have to end on a devastating note. In fact, Benedict's words (complete, end of era) don't make me think "devastating", but more of an ending, a more serene, poignant feel (yes, I know that's reading far too much into those words!).
I do think there seemed to be a lot of wish fulfilment in TAB - even just the fact that it was a Victorian setting. And yes, getting to redo Reichenbach complete with waterfall and John finally, after over a century, arriving on the scene! In that case, TAB allowed them to do something that they had already rejected with their modern version. Perhaps the wish fulfilment is something else along those lines.
I do have a slight worry that they have now opened things up to do absolutely anything they want - in a mind palace! I'm certain the mind palace will feature, but I hope they use it carefully.

Remember the ending of Study In Pink, where Sherlock and John walk off into the distance together as the credits roll and the music starts to play, giving each other that little happy smirk as if they're both thinking "yep, this is the guy I wanna hang out with"? Well...that's how I imagine S4 ending too.

That is beautiful...

I just came here to suggest something similar. You've been faster. :-D

I think the perfect ending for me would be something like the ending of ASiP, as mentioned, but with Johnlock implied in such a way that it could still be read either way. That way everyone can have their cake and eat it too.

That would be nice .

No, it would not. I like their relationship just the way it is.

This is your opinion. Other people may think differently.

I guess that may depend upon whether they are both alive!

If they end up as two ghosts happy in love with each other, haunting 221b, that's fine with me either.

I thought this bit of the GQ interview was interesting
( )
“Just wait and see. It’s wonderful, it’s very exciting. It’s exceeded all kind of expectations for how we top what we’ve done before, and it’s ramped up the whole thing. It just gets better and better and better.”
More than other series, he says, this one feels more like one story in three parts - with a villain who “comes slamming into the centre” by the end of the first episode, “and carries on into the second and resolves in the end. It’s f***ing ridiculous, it’s so exciting”.
It is, he says, “one of the best pieces of drama I’ve ever had to do, some of the best sequences I’ve ever had to shoot”.
I wish this was just transcribed rather than quoted, but he seems to be saying here that the villain has a role in all three episodes. This is interesting, because as far as we know Toby J was only confirmed for Ep2. So either he has been secretly filming a little for Eps 1 and 3 (which could possibly have been done while doing Ep2 - I'm not sure) and is the archvillain for the entire series, or he's the Ep2 villain, as we thought, but there is a different archvillain for the entire series (very exciting trying to guess who!), or ... I'm taking the quote out of context and Benedict is talking about the story, not the villain. My money is on the third option, but it's fun to speculate, of course.
Even if he just means the story, it's interesting to know that there will be an over-arching story for the series, even though I think we suspected that anyway! I just get more and more excited about January!

Still want to know why they are so secretive about the final episode.

Because they're trying to pull it off!
I have loads of ideas, but they start getting too wild. But I think either a massive twist, or a tie-in to real life events/mass media. And of course, that feeling that it's an ending of something now too (possibly because of the twist).

Saw thispicture today on Facebook:
Is it official or fanart? Because the broken string looks positively chilling...

Yup, it's real and it's HAPPENING! *bouncing in my chair!*
Already planning my 'snackage' and perfect alignment of chair and TV for New Year's Day.
I love the broken string violin! It's so perfect for this show!

Omgomgomg, this is awesome. This is a bigger event for me than New Year's Eve, and I'm not even kidding.
Lol about the "surprisingly okay" tea, Phantom!
