The way I understand it, with "the story we're doing" he's talking about the story of the special. So they only can tell this very story in the form of a special and not as part of the 'normal' show.

Yes, that's the way I read it.

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

That makes me even more curious, tbh.

-----------------------------------

I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

Doesn't matter what it's about or if it's a standalone.
You know we'll all watch it obsessively and examine each screen capture with zoom and analyze the score and lighting for clues.

Are you sure, tonnaree...? Sounds a bit far-fetched to me.

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

It does mean that we know that whatever is going to happen with Mary (or Moriarty) it's not necessarily relevant to the present day.  (For instance, Sherlock, John and Mary could be a crime-solving trio in the special, but that might never happen in S4).

Somehow this announcement has made me even more excited than before. I didn't think it was possible.

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

I'm with  you!    Very exciting.    Standalone or not,   doesn't really matter to me.
(I actually kind of think of the entire Series 3 as a "standalone". )     Can't wait!

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

Me too.  I had a bit of a yen to see a period Sherlock done by the team, but didn't want it give up any episodes for it.   I suppose that as this is a "special" it's not really an episode, so it's the perfect solution.

I will excitedly accept anything the Sherlock team wants to give me.
I am a cheap easy Sherlock whore.

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

I think what I find most exciting is that because it's a standalone they don't have to worry about continuity or development and can just let their Holmes-fannishness have free rein!

A post from aprilwats:

Mark Gatiss is quoted to say that the Christmas Special is "set in 1885, the reasons for which will become clear.” http://www.cultbox.co.uk/features/guides/sherlock-series-4-news-summary

Ideas about the reasons?

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

No real ideas yet.  I just note that it's exactly 10 years earlier than 1895.

Oops, seems there was a mistake:

So, 1895, ladies and gentlemen … fire away!

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

oh, ok.  So it is 1895.

The same year as the Oscar Wilde trial.

Yep. And there is the beginning of The Adventure of the Three Students ...

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

http://allpoetry.com/poem/8599039-221b-by-Vincent-Starrett

... A yellow fog swirls past the window-pane
As night descends upon this fabled street:
A lonely hansom splashes through the rain,
The ghostly gas lamps fail at twenty feet.
Here, though the world explode, these two survive,
And it is always eighteen ninety-five.

"221B" Vincent Starrett.

Wasn't 1895 Sherlock's best year (and the number John's blog counter stuck at?).

I was wondering if any of the original stories were meant to be set in this year?

Re: The special - the game is on (spoilers)

Doh - I must have missed that when I was posting!  Thanks! I haven't read that one.  The  most obvious "reason" for it being 1895 had to be something to do with the original stories, doesn't it?  But maybe the reason is more closely related to the current series, not the original.
