Hey,
I don't really know where to post this, and I'm sorry if someone told this already.
But as a was in Germany while HLV aired, I saw the german version of Magnussens deductions, and I remember quite clearly how he deduced Sherlock's pornpreferences which were normal.
Now, that leaves two things,
1. Sherlock is apparently not gay, but does have a sex-drive (?)
2. What exactly is normal defined by a man who pisses in other people's chimneys?
I would love to hear some other people's opinion on this

There are lots of theories about this, including that Sherlock planted this information for Magnussen to find and that Sherlock doesn't actually look at porn.
I disagree with that because I know someone who identifies as asexual and through her have met other asexuals and many of them are really into porn for self-gratifying reasons. They have sex drives, but no interest in having sexual relationships with other people. So I have no problem believing that Sherlock has urges like any other man and that he might turn to porn telling himself it's for research into human behaviour or human anatomy.
So between this revelation and Sherlock's comment in A Scandal in Belgrave that he uses John's computer to look at naked women (which, like the porn comment, may or may not be true...), I think there is enough evidence to suggest that if Sherlock were interested in pursuing a sexual relationship with somone, it would more likely be a woman than a man. Most people will disagree with me and I agree that Sherlock gives off a gay vibe, but this info is what it is.

Well, interesting theory, and I totally agree on the being with a woman part.
I'm pretty sure Sherlock is anything but asexual. I believe he's just this big bomb of emotions waiting to explode. And filled to the brink with sexual repression (Irene's in his mind palast. As she interrupted his thoughts she was naked, caressing his cheeck. Shows why she's there in the first place, eh?)
He's just trying so hard not to care and not to show feelings. (Caring is never an advantage)
But that's just my theory

Yup, I've personally experience that with a boyfriend who until his late 30s had no interest in dating, much less sex until that point, and wasn't even sure of his sexual orientation. It took a while to sort all of that out, but once we did, woah! I can totally see the same thing happening with Sherlock if he gets to a point where he decides that dating is something he wants to try. He has so much curiosity and is always looking for his next high, so I can imagine him getting bored one day, deciding to seriously explore the whole girlfriend or boyfriend thing, and then his hormones taking over.
And filled to the brink with sexual repression (Irene's in his mind palast. As she interrupted his thoughts she was naked, caressing his cheeck. Shows why she's there in the first place, eh?)
I thought it was telling that he implied that it's okay for her to show up naked in his mind palace if he's not busy. After we learned in HLV that he apparently likes long soaks in the tub, I started getting visions of him doing Irene-focused mind palace sessions during his baths.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean

I'm a bit confused here to be honest...
So the porn preference showing as "normal" can only mean heterosexual??
I honestly hope I'm misunderstanding all of you...
And as to Irene: he very clearly sends her away, and not in the most gentle manner? He clearly does not understand her advances and the type of sexuality and love that she represents imo.

Just to make this clear. The 'Normal' porn, well that's not just my opinion. Really, that's just a fact. If you go onto any pornsite you want, you will normally end up on a 'straight' site. If you want gay porn, that's well, that's a special category, so in my opinion that does mean that normal means heterosexual.
Because, if a girl watches lesbian porn, she will not say normal porn.
It'll be ''Well, normal porn and lesbian.''
This is not because I'm homophobe (I'm bisexual, my brother is gay. Really, even he says normal porn is not gay porn. There's a distinction to make here.) or have anything against gays, it's just how ....well porn works.

I would be tad confused if in a show involving an openly gay writer and a couple of gay actors " normal" would be considered only as straight. I think it might rather have spelled out "straight" not "normal".

I took the word "normal" as in distinction from more kinky things like BDSM.
As for Irene - I think he remembers her naked because it was their first meeting and one that left him impressed. But in his mind he sends her away like all the other women and Mycroft because he does not need them anymore. For me the fireplace scene in ASiB with the having dinner/eating metaphor shows quite well that he is not interested in her in a sexual way.

Yup. This is an area I know where more about than I wish I did, but a lot of my friends are into 'alternate' lifestyles, porn, slash fanfiction, and the like. 'Normal' porn is heterosexual vanilla stuff. Gay rights might be improving in leaps and bounds, but gay is still not 'normal' in today's world, sadly enough. And let me be clear, today's world in general; this is not a personal opinion. I was raised by two mothers, so what is 'normal' to me is a happy, committed, and enduring partnership regardless of the genders of the parties involved.

This is from Magnussen's point of view, and I wonder if "normal" just means "nothing of note" i.e. nothing that could be used for blackmail, etc.

In this case normal means "what ever is currently on John's laptop because I'm a nosy bastard."
Sorry, couldn't resist.
(not really sorry)

to be honest, i was assuming that the 'porn reference' was how frequently they referred to it, hence the 'normal' description was saying that it wasn't excessive viewing, nor little viewing but the average amount. I probably sound very stupid but I was thinking that it was a reference to how often porn was viewed, not what type??? :OOO

do you know what, I've just realised that is says 'preferance' rather than 'referance'... never mind me over here :'D

which could explain why they both seem to have the same "preferences".
And well, you know. "the same "preferences"...
ISG, I love your second point, "What exactly is normal defined by a man who pisses in other people's chimneys?"
As for the "porn preferences : normal", I understood it like "not kinky". Because that would have shown, definitely. And it might be used against them, because it's Magnussen we're talking about, here.

I know some have stated that he might have researched porn to prepare for his sham relationship with Janine. I don't agree with that seeing as they never had sex. (And gawd, wouldn't that be horrible if they did and his knowledge about sex would come from porn? Poor Janine!)
What I'm more curious of is why the creators decided to put that in at all? Why mention "porn preference" at all? It adds nothing at all to the show, except speculations. So perhaps it's just meant as a small hint that Sherlock is not asexual?

Thank you! "Normal" could simply mean, no bestiality, no child porn, no water sports---- whether one is Gay or Straight isn't relevant to what is "normal".
