Mothers and sons in series 3

Series 3 sees the appearance of the mothers.
Mothers in general haven't been a subject so far (apart from Jennifer Wilson being mother of a stillborn daughter).
And now we see mothers (and "surrogate" mothers) all over series 3, caring about the wellbeing of their sons/"sons".

Sherlock/Mycroft
Appearance of Mummy Holmes: "Somebody's put a bullet in my boy…"

John
Appearance of Mrs Hudson: "I'm not your mother, I've no right to expect it…"
Appearance of Mary, acting like a caring mother in TSoT in the meaning of "why not invite that Sherlock for tea, he seems to be a nice boy to play…"

Isaac Whitney

Appearance of his concerned mother Kate at the Watsons' house.

This concentrated appearance of mothers adds to my impression that "caring" is a main topic  in series 3.

John: "Have you spoken to Mycroft, Molly, uh, anyone?"
Mrs Hudson: "They don’t matter. You do."

I BELIEVE IN SERIES 5!

Yes, that is interesting, Tobe. And I would like to add another pairing:

Molly/Sherlock - she takes a drastic measure when slapping his face in HLV but she cares for his wellbeing and is afraid he might to damage to himself. Not a loving gesture as such but born out of love and friendship. And in the mind palace scene we see that Sherlock has taken her action to heart in some way.

Interesting! It has crossed my mind actually how much the 'mother' has become a theme... Maybe it was to give some form of contrast now that even John had turned a little cold and less 'caring' because of his personal crisis? (both losing Sherlock and Mary turning out to have tried to 'kill' his friend).

Molly definitely dished out some 'tough love'.  In no uncertain terms she was saying "I will not tolerate this behavior, young man. I'm ashamed of you!" which is very parental like.  If she could have taken him over her knee with a strap I think she might have. LOL! But seeing as how she isn't really his mother she went for the face slap instead.  So there we get a combination of 'mother' in addition to 'outraged girlfriend'. I think one good smack would have been enough - but poor Molly has a lot of frustration built up inside her because of Sherlock, doesn't she. She let that show a bit.

And I said "dangerous" and here you are.

You. It's always you. John Watson, you keep me right.
