Well, to be fair, a lot of things are hidden in plain sight and it often takes several viewings to notice them.
There is so much to discover in each scene... and that's part of the beauty of the show.

That's the brilliance of a wonderful script superbly acted. All the nuances and inflections in every sentence and right down to the tiniest facial movements. It's all perfection.

I don't really see Sherlock as fighting tears there (just showing at-ease depth), but do love that scene just as much. 
Those times when awkward or relieved emotion peeks through a bit more… such as, say, this telling moment… (just to give everyone a brief respite of humor) 
And yes, part of the reason I fangirled over Ben and Martin more than past favorites… that skill!!
