John's wardrobe has been described as 'urban chic" and I think it works for him. It is definitely not flashy but more rugged and comfortable. I wasn't crazy about the coat he wore in Hounds and I didn't love the Christmas sweater but I'm okay with the rest of it.
It's a perfect counterpoint to Sherlock. The opposition is a thing of beauty.

That's the most important thing. The wardrobe totally suits John and is an extention of his character.

Maybe the audience can connect to John more than they can to Sherlock. He wears more "normal" clothes so maybe he feels more relatable than Sherlock?
