Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Do people only believe the writers when they say something they agree with?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

No. I am going to explain it again: In this article Mark talked about his favourite film, not about Sherlock. No reason to lie or hide something as it was not about his own project. I hope I made myself clear.

Regarding Mark Gatiss and his view on The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (nothing about gay jokes in here). This is not about "Sherlock" so I tend to believe him here more than when he talks about the show:

To be honest, all that they say about Private Life convinces me that if they were going to go down the Johnlock route, they wouldn't make it "desperately unspoken".  They would right that wrong.   I hope they wouldn't write them as closeted in the 2010s.

(I don't see anything in the article that doesn't fit with what Mark says in the interview - he says they're referencing the scene mentioned in the article).

I joke a lot but to be serious for a moment I could not agree with you more.  I still hold out the hope that Moriarty's resurection is a sham.  If he's really still alive it would invalidate every emotion I felt at the fall.

Smartass side note:  BBC Three may ship it harder than I do.

Yes, the ending of HLV was kind of brutal, and I like the fact that in TRF Sherlock manages to outwit Moriarty ... I would hate to think Moriarty had outwitted him all along.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Precisely.
They would sacrifice one of the best episodes in the entire show for the sake of cheap shock scene in the special.
Certainly not a sign of the good writers.

I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

Wow, that escalated quickly, trying to keep up somehow. Just my two cents:

I was struck once again by how selective Mark's answers were. Gay joke and all that, but not a word about empty chairs, about the dancefloor, about coming back to life for John, about the tarmac scene.
He mentions Sherlock saying he has neither boyfriend nor girlfriend, about suppressing his feelings, about being focussed on his brain only. Which is basically series 1 stuff.
It is as if series 3 never happened. And this is quite suspicious in itself.

And honestly - much of series 3 does not make sense without Johnlock. Take that away from TSoT and you are left with a not very satisfying murder attempt and a lot of people drinking champagne. And do not get me started on HLV.

It think it completely makes sense if you can see the relationship as central (without being sexual).  Don't you think they can love each other without feeling "that" way about each other?  That's not S1 - it's the whole 3 series (for me).  The "transport" part is about Sherlock and sex, and that continues all the way through the series - he just doesn't go there.  Loving John is stated openly (I'm sure by the writers in interviews, but definitely in the actual writing).  I suppose that kind of love doesn't worry him so much (and on the evidence he's got to go on, being with John helps him rather than hinders him).

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

I don't feel their love for each other is "desperatly unspoken". It is actually spoken in straight words both from John to Sherlock and from Sherlock to John.

I don't see the Johnlock as some sort of secret pining in the closet that none of them dare to talk or think about. It's there, all through the show. Everything they say and do (well, except for SOME thing Sherlock says and does) show this.

It's not the gay jokes that makes me ship Johnlock, it never has been.

Me? I've always said I don't think it will happen in the show.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Sorry, I did remember that afterwards.
Yes, I recall your views are similar to mine:  I love Johnlock as my own, personal fantasy,
I think it's fine in fan art, fan fic and fan videos.
But this is separate from the shiow that inspired these creative works.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Yeah, that's how I see it too. I see it in the show, but I equally see that it isn't there.

Although I will add that nothing would make me more happy than to be proven wrong.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

I would have been delighted if they had made it a full gay romp.
I would have been happy to be proven wrong on Johnlock...
But in the face of reality, I feel the only rational response is to accept it is not there and is not going to happen,

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

If we're talking about them being together as lovers (not loving each other as friends, which is spoken, I agree), then yes, that is completely unspoken in the show.  "Desperately unspoken" is what Moftiss have said about The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, which hinted at it, and which Billy Wilder later said he wished he'd made overt.   Given their feelings about that film, I don't think Moftiss would repeat Billy Wilder's "mistake", not in a time and place where they would be free to make them an openly gay couple if they'd wanted to.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

'Desperately unspoken ' does seem a perfectly fitting phrase for the airport farewell Mofftiss wrote also. Is that just a nod to TPLOSH in Sherlock...or a hint at something completely different?.

Yes! The airport farewell scene is VERY fitting for the term "desperately unspoken"!
